Tennis Anyone? & Needlepoint Finds

Hugh Hefner Playboy Bunny Needlepoint Tennis Racket Cover

This needlepoint tennis racket cover was created by playboy bunny and girlfriend Barbi Benton for Hugh Hefner. It is marked “Tennis Anyone?/ HMH/ by Barbi.” It is circa 1970s. It sold at auction with a Spalding racket for $1,600.

Barbi Benton appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine four times between July of 1969 through December of 1985 in addition to two nude photo layouts in the December of 1973 and January of 1975 issues. When Hugh Hefner first asked Barbi out on a date, she reportedly demurred to the then 42 year old Hefner and said, “ I don’t know, I’ve never dated anyone over 24 before," to which Hefner replied, “That’s all right, neither have I.” She is credited with convincing Hugh Hefner to buy the Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills in 1974.

Palm Beach Bauble Stockings

Limited Edition: Palm Beach Lately: Let's Shell-abrate

Bauble Stockings are a family tradition, where the final gift of Christmas, or a clue to it, is found in your Bauble Stocking. Bauble stockings are petite needlepoint stockings meant to be used to hold the final special Christmas gift. Perhaps a surprise trip, event tickets, an engagement ring, a check, a membership, a piece of jewelry, not necessarily the most expensive gift, but the most thoughtful and meaningful.

This tradition creates lasting memories, year after year. Each needlepoint Bauble Stocking is hand-stitched in Haiti for fair trade by a certified BCorp.

Sisters Beth Aschenbach and Danielle Norcross are the creative duo behind Palm Beach Lately, a lifestyle brand and blog that celebrates the beauty, charm, and modern elegance of coastal living. Known for their pastel palettes, timeless style, and artful eye for detail, they’ve become tastemakers in home décor, fashion, and entertaining.

I love adding whimsical and unexpected touches to my tablescapes. A while back I found these adorable brand new hand needlepointed palm tree baby slippers on eBay. This past week I decided to see if I could find others.

Chinoiserie Pagoda Embroidered Needlepoint Christmas Stocking

This is my favorite Christmas collection of all time. It is the Southern Living Blue Christmas Collection. Lots of chinoiserie, blue and white, needlepoint, and wicker. Dillard's high quality. A serious Amanda Lindroth feel to it. Excellent prices!!! I suspect many of these will sell out - I am ordering today. Wow, wow, wow!

Cheeky Beachy Needlepoint

Furbish

I so love needlepoint. It has had a huge resurgence of late with the popularity of Grandmillenial Style and Coastal Grandmother Style. I have found some wonderful needlepoint pillows that have a cheeky, beachy, modern vibe. These are so fun!

The Mini Chinoiserie Dining Room

CCC

My newest addition to my mini rattan beach house is this pair of Chinese panels. The panels are over 100 year old antique Chinese embroidered silk. They feature beautiful exotic climbing tropical plants and even a palm tree. I made them from remnants from an antique kimono.

The wool needlepoint rug is vintage from an estate. It is circa 1981 and dated and signed by the creator.

The Tiny Beach House

CCC

I thought I would share a little progress report on CCC II. I have been furnishing my rattan mini beach house with all my favorite things - chinoiserie, palm trees, blue and white, stripes, seashells, wicker, Chinese garden stools, banana leaf, and needlepoint. I would like to live here!

It is still a work in progress - next project is artwork. Here are some peeks at the rooms.

Grandmillennial and Needlepoint

Tory Burch

With staying at home being the new normal for now and grandmillennial style on the rise, needlepoint is having a real moment again. Needlepoint kits have been selling like hotcakes. I too loved needlepoint and had pillows and rugs (particularly Portugese needlepoint rugs) all over my home. I learned to needlepoint at a wonderful shop in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Over the years, they seemed too granny and I did away with most.

What are your thoughts on this resurgence? I like modern needlepoint with a bit of an edge to it. These Tory Burch are great examples. I have a couple of her pillows. Tory's father loved to needlepoint and taught her. I love the mix of Chinoiserie and modern needlepoint.

Jonathan Adler has lots of fun needlepoint as well. And I am still hunting for a vintage needlepoint gaming table cover in pink and green.

This Jonathan Adler needlepoint alligator pillow is a new eBay find of mine and a wink to the alligators in my backyard lake.

The Blue and White Lanai

My Lanai

Here are a few shots of my lanai featuring my new dragon pool float and my new wicker chaises. I sat out on one of the chaises yesterday afternoon with the two pups and it was wonderful.

Do you see the zebra hide beach towel in the leather holster in the last photo? I had a strange memory when I put it out there. I posted on January 13, 2013 (more than seven years ago) about finding it at Neiman Marcus Last Call reduced from $240 to $40. Zebra hide was all the rage then and this was a fun take on it.

I commented that I loved it, but wasn't sure where I was going to use it since I didn't have a pool and am not a huge beach goer. A gratuitous comment that I deleted chastised me for buying something that was not utilitarian. Hey sweetheart, how much of Chinoiserie or interior design for that matter is about being utilitarian? At any rate Angie, now I have my very own swimming pool and will be drying myself with this very chic towel. How's that for utilitarian?

Alligators in Florida

Jonathan Adler Limited Edition Needlepoint Pillow

Here in Florida, the alligator saw his shadow on Groundhog Day and we get 12 more months of sunshine! I just found this Limited Edition Jonathan Adler needlepoint pillow on eBay and bought it. Super cute. As I write this, three alligators are sunning themselves in my backyard including two babies. One of my favorite things about Florida is all the animals - in my yard I see sandhilll cranes, deer, armadillos, alligators, roseate spoonbills, mallards, egrets, and pelicans. Every evening at sunset like clockwork about 50 great egrets roost in one of our trees. Quite a sight.

I did get this guy at Z Gallerie years back and it is perfect in the Florida house.

Now available at CB2

I have been hunting for this discontinued Jonathan Adler Limited Edition Greek key brass alligator for years. A Chinoiserie alligator!

Tory Burch - Chinoiserie Filled Offices

Architectural Digest

Some workaholics are said to "live at the office," but I really could live in these NYC offices of Tory Burch, with their wonderful combination of traditional, modern, mid century, Chinoiserie, and Hollywood Regency. BTW, I had been wanting the needlepoint pillow on the right that retails for $175.00 and I just bought it brand new on eBay for $30.00. Tory's father was a needlepointer and would often say this to Tory's mother. He needlepointed it on a cushion for her and had it engraved on her wedding band. All the pillows on the sofa were her parents'.

Zebras and Palm Beach Chic

Do you love zebras? They are so Palm Beach Chic. I scored this beautiful finished needlepoint on Etsy yesterday that I will have made into a pillow. Think needlepoint is too old school? Not me. I love it. Designers like Jonathan Adler use lots of needlepoint but in a more modern way. I'm thinking about a great black and yellow trim on this to edge it up a bit.

Check out my Pinterest board on Zebras here. And go pop over and see my inspiration board today on The Glam Pad - my first post in a series on how I would makeover the Chinese Village House in Coral Gables, Florida. Click here to see my vision for the entryway and the main hall - there are zebras galore! Next up in the series will be the dining room.
