Celadon Chinoiserie Eagle Sculpture

I have been a Philadelphia Eagles fan since college at Bryn Mawr on Philadelphia's Main Line. When I started college, I drove a huge Cadillac from Chicago to Philadelphia to bring out all my things. The Cadillac belonged to a Chicago Bears player who had been traded to the Philadelphia Eagles and needed his car brought East.

Although I love my kitchen and have no current plans to redo it, this gorgeous kitchen is definitely going in my files for down the road. I would call this color celadon although it could also be called a pale pistachio or a soft mint. I find it so calming. It would be stunning at CCC with my aquarium window looking out onto palm trees and preserves.

I have always used lots of green in my house, but it works especially well here with the gorgeous tropical garden outdoors. I was working in the garden yesterday and decided to cut a stem for the house. I have five Split Leaf Philodendrons and this is the smallest leaf I could find - many of the leaves are over three feet. They are very dramatic in the garden.

The New Blue and White

 No, I don't think anything will ever replace blue and white. It is a classic that has stood the test of time. But lately I am increasingly drawn to celadon. Especially in tropical locales, look how nicely it plays with wicker, seashells, palm fronds, and the popular braided seagrass basket. I have found a couple pieces lately at HomeGoods to add to my collection. It would also be lovely with a collection of sea glass.

This wonderful dining room has many elements we will be seeing more of this year. First, as I featured in my Chinoiserie Trends for 2017, green will be big this year. 

Another Chinoiserie trend this year will be mixing white Chinese porcelain, with blue and white Chinese porcelain, or as here with Celadon.

Subtle Chinoiserie

For those who gravitate toward a subtle approach to color and to Chinoiserie, here are two lovely examples. In the dining room above, Suzanne Kasler uses a celadon and blue palette. The Frances Elkins loop chairs and Louis XVI chairs are a wonderful alternative to the Chinese Chippendale chair, grasscloth in a soft green is used on the walls, and white tureens, reminiscent of blanc de Chine, grace the table. Below, Phoebe Howard uses a beautiful soft palette with pale lavender walls, framed Chinoiserie panels, and a Chinese Chippendale bench.
