Caring for Chinese Porcelain

Legend Accents Playing Foo Dogs Temple Jar

There is Chinese porcelain that has lasted for hundreds and even thousands of years. Caring for your collection of Chinese porcelain - ginger jars, vases, garden stools, and such, unless they are museum quality antiques behind glass, need only involve a few easy steps.

The Chinoiserie Palette

House of Old and New

This is such a lovely example of how a chinoiserie vignette with Chinese porcelain need not be limited to a color palette of blue and white. Here a coral jar and a foo dog in green work beautifully with the classic blue and white Chinese porcelain pieces. My home has lots of coral, green, and blue and white, so this would work beautifully at CCC.

The Scent of Famille Rose

Famille Rose Scented Candle

Of course "famille rose" does not have a scent - it is a type of Chinese porcelain introduced in the 18th century and very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The term famille rose (meaning of the “pink family”) refers to porcelain glazed with enamels in a predominantly pink, white, yellow, and green color palette.

Coral Chinoiserie

Coral Chinese Porcelain

Chinese porcelain in tones of coral, orange, and Chinese red are a gorgeous alternative to blue and white Chinese porcelain. I love this look for a beach house or summer house and it's so pretty paired with conch shells with their beautiful soft coral interiors. It looks stunning mixed with blue and white Chinese porcelain.

Orange

Orange continues as a hot trend this fall. Could it get any better than the ceiling and fretwork walls lacquered in Hermes orange with a display of Chinoiserie porcelain vases?

Spring and Chinoiserie

Mary McDonald
This week we will welcome spring with a new series on spring cleaning Chinoiserie Chic style - spring colors, Chinoiserie outdoors, and brightening and lightening your home for the warm weather with Chinoiserie. Tip #1 - please use Mary McDonald's example and bring some of your blue and white Chinese porcelain outdoors. I have garden stools and ginger jars that I have had in the garden for twenty years all year round in the Washington, DC area.

Blue and White Checks

I like this rather unusual combination of a framed Chinoiserie mural and a collection of blue and white Chinese porcelain with the unexpected choice of the more casual oversized blue and white checked slipcovered chairs.
