The Chinoiserie Bedroom

| Shelley Johnstone - Frederic Magazine |
This is another lovely room in interior designer Shelley Johnstone's Naples, Florida condo - the master bedroom. We previously looked at the dining room. I find it both beautiful and instructive on how to create a chinoiserie bedroom that is classic yet modern. Let's look at some of the elements.
Patterns abound here - I count five that we can see in this shot alone. What makes it work is that the color palette is soft and harmonious and the patterns are largely chinoiserie florals making it feel like a garden.
I see the Rattan book on the side table - I just bought that for myself. Can you make out any other titles on her bedside table? LOL. I love peeking at what books people have. Here it is on my vintage wicker elephant in my foyer.

Mattress Help

My current mattress in the master bedroom is a Heavenly Bed that I have been very happy with. I need a new mattress for the guest bedroom. There are SO many choices out there now! You all were very helpful when I was pillow shopping and I ended up with Casper pillows that I love.
So I would appreciate your suggestions on mattresses. Casper is in the running since the pillows are so great. And even though it is for the guest bedroom, I want something really nice. Thanks in advance for your help.

The Blue & White Chinoiserie Bedroom

This is a bedroom with so many ideas to inspire. I love the seating area at the foot of the bed with the pair of wicker elephants as side tables and the pair of side tables as a coffee table. The sofa is divine - stried, tufted, and bullion fringe. The pair of rattan bar carts as bedside tables is another favorite. Perhaps my favorite is the two different Quadrille chinoiserie patterns - Lyford Diamond Bamboo wallpaper and Paradise Background as a headboard. And as an aside, I am so delighted my house came with plantation shutters - simple, classic, private, easy, perfect for a tropical climate.

Palm Beach Neutrals

| Courtney Giles Interiors |
This lovely bedroom is from the newly opened Kips Bay Show House Palm Beach. Although we generally associate Palm Beach with lots of vibrant color, this is a wonderful example of embracing that style with a neutral palette. The palm wallpaper is Schumacher Blair House Palm. I especially love the scalloped linens. I spot a Chinese Chippendale chair and an orchid on the side wall.

Palm Trees Indoors

In this fanciful tropical bedroom, Amanda Lindroth combines many of my favorite things. Wicker and rattan is in abundance - they will continue to be huge trends in 2021 - especially designer versions of these wonderful natural elements. The rattan canopy bed is fantastic and I am a sucker for canopy beds. I always wanted one as a child and my parents refused in their ultra modern mid century home. Note the wicker pagodas and rattan breakfast tray.

More on Making the Perfect Bed
![]() |
| Danielle Rollins |
A wicker bed tray is a great addition to the perfect bed. This wicker tray is from Danielle Rollins' online shop and is shown above in her former Buckhead Atlanta bedroom. She has recently moved into a newly restored home in Palm Beach.
For those who are not fans of eating in bed, a bed tray also is wonderfully useful for magazines, mail, or a mini desk with so many working from home now. A quick search turned up many new and vintage wicker versions - there are lot of vintage ones on eBay and Etsy starting at around $60 that could even be spray painted - coral pink, emerald green, or navy blue would all be fun. I have also seen them used on sofas as a little mini work station.

The Perfect Bed

| Willams Sonoma Home |
Thanks for all the input and ideas yesterday on pillows and beds. I have lots to explore, and I will put something together as well on making the perfect bed. With all of us spending more time at home nowadays, it is more important than ever to have our homes as cozy and comfortable as they can be. The shams above in this wonderful chinoiserie bedroom are the Chambers Cane Embroidery Collection from Williams Sonoma Home and the monograms are Matouk. Are these his and her monograms?
If you have any more ideas on pillows and bed making in general, feel free to add them as comments today.

Amanda Lindroth DIY

I find this Bahamas master bedroom by Amanda Lindroth very intriguing. The headboards look to be a pair of twin wooden headboards that one could easily source second hand and paint in a coral pink and create a king headboard. So too, the bench at the end of the bed does not appear to be a bench at all but rather three chairs painted a matching coral pink. One could easily substitute stools for the chairs which would be much easier to find.

Chinoiserie Wallpaper

| Anewall at Anthroplogie |
Is anyone familiar with Anewall? This wallpaper is by two sisters in Canada. It's available at Anthropologie here.
Anewall is the work of two sisters from Vancouver. They design vibrant wallpaper and wall art inspired by their love for the French countryside and all things vintage.
It reminds me a bit of this wallpaper I posted about a few years back. The wallpaper is salvaged 18th century hand painted that was found at auction and pasted into a collage. (The trundle bed was their daughter's in their former East Village apartment).

Chinoiserie Gone Wrong
![]() |
| Miles Redd - House Beautiful |
Can a room cause vertigo? I have a physical reaction to the wallpaper on the ceiling like the room is sideways or topsy-turvy. I feel nauseous. I literally can't look at it for very long.
But I also just don't get it visually. I like a room where the entire room in papered, including the ceiling, but with the same paper on the ceiling as the walls. White walls with a dark wallpapered ceiling is beyond me. The room is top heavy. Do you feel like interior designers sometimes try to be unique and it just doesn't work?
It really annoys me, because Quadrille China Seas Lyford Trellis is a favorite Chinoiserie wallpaper of mine.
And the staging is so funny. How do you get in and out of bed - crawl in between the table and chair?
I also must say that purple is my least favorite color in the world. I do not have a single purple item in my home or wardrobe. I love a soft lavender, but not this color. I also dislike the purple trim in the corners. Gimmicky.
So I guess I hate the white walls, the papered ceiling, the trim, the staging, and the color palette. And as for the art.....
I do love the Paule Marrot piece of art, but don't get it used here at all. Not sure how those colors work in this room. It seems out in left field.
I adore Paule Marrot art. I wish I had a place for her "Feathers," but I don't. I have so much art I love and with an open floor plan and tons of windows and sliders, wall space is at a premium here.
Update - I just found this photo of the same room - I dislike the door and the curtains as well. Yikes. And the photo on top appeared on the cover of House Beautiful - June 2016.
So guys, weigh in. Love it, hate it? What works for you, what doesn't? To me, Miles has missed by a mile.

This is a neat idea - using two twin headboards together to create a king bed. I love the Chinese Chippendale beds and bedside tables and the coral pink and white palette. And the wicker tray is so lovely - I could go for some fresh squeezed orange juice this morning or even a mimosa - it is Sunday after all!
