Figs

de Gournay

This gorgeous wallcovering by de Gournay features a fig tree in a blue and white cachepot. I love figs and have a favorite recipe with figs to share that is great for entertaining. It is wonderful with Champagne.

The Chinoiserie Wet Bar

Mary Beth Wagner Interiors

Isn't this the most beautiful wet bar? The wallcovering is a custom colorway in Gracie Studio's French Deco. I love the gorgeous marble counters and brass hardware. The brass and glass bar is stunning.

Pink & Green

Alessandra Branca

I definitely love pink and green as much as I do blue and white. And not surprisingly, these are the four colors that fill my home and my closet. The wallcovering is de Gournay. My home in Alexandria was filled with striped silk taffeta curtains like these.

Chinoiserie Steals

Anthropologie

Lovers of chinoiserie covet the look of hand painted chinoiserie wallcoverings, but the cost can be very high. Doing a room in wallpapers like de Gournay or Gracie can cost as much as a new car.

A New Chinoiserie Gone Wrong

de Gournay

I received a great response to my new series on Chinoiserie Gone Wrong. Lots of comments, lots of emails, and some great ideas for upcoming posts. Thank you!

I am a huge fan of de Gournay wallpaper. My first post when I created Chinoiserie Chic more than 11 years ago below is of de Gournay wallcovering - a room by Ruthie Sommers. I still love this.

Ruthie Sommers - de Gournay

I had never seen a de Gournay wallcovering I have not liked. Until now. Yikes. Check out the green blobs.

Can you guess what this is supposed to be?

1. Melons?
2. Avocados?
3. Breasts?
4. Alien pods?
5. Green rainbows?
6. Rocks?
7. Exotic eggs?
8. Some strange fruit?

And the correct answer is Kiso Mountains. Wow. And the scale of those flowering trees? Some are as tall as the mountains. I cannot imagine decorating a room with this or living with it. I don't find anything aesthetically pleasing about this at all. Perhaps in a commercial space like a restaurant. Otherwise a hard pass.

Love it? Hate it? Thoughts?

Pink Chinoiserie Walls

I love pink, as you may have guessed, and I love seeing the new penchant for painting walls pink in rooms like living rooms heretofore never seen in pink. But my favorite of all is pink Chinoiserie walls. The bedroom above of Carolle Thibaut Pomerantz in Veranda has a hand painted early 19th century Chinese panel. Here are more gorgeous examples. Also, visit my Houzz Ideabook this month on Pretty in Pink Chinoiserie and my Pinterest board on Pink Chinoiserie.

Navy Grasscloth

Peter Frank
One of my very favorite wall treatments is grasscloth. Green, environmentally friendly, elegant, textural, warm, and sophisticated, it can be made from sea grass, jute, hemp, arrowroot, rush, sisal, or bamboo. It is wonderful in new homes or homes without architectural detailing, adding instant character. It can even be screen printed or embroidered. I especially love grasscloth in my color of the year navy. Thursday we will look at some of my favorite navy wallpapers, including several grasscloth ones.

Red and Green Chinoiserie

This is such a lovely combination-red Gracie wallcovering with celadon draperies and upholstery and sea grass rug. Not sure if I am on board with the two different chairs, are you? This is from Joe Nye's wonderful book Flair.

The Chinoiserie Entry

This may be a small space, but it is absolutely perfect.
