The Chinoiserie Breakfast Room

Krista Ewart - House Beautiful

Yesterday I posted a fabulous bathroom using Clarence House The Vase wallpaper in orange. This breakfast room uses this iconic David Hicks wallpaper in yellow. It is paired with white Chinese Chippendale chairs and a black painted floor. This would be a sunny way to start every day.

Blue and White

Tom Scheerer - House Beautiful

One does not often see large scale wallpaper in hallways, but this use of Clarence House The Vase wallpaper is quite dramatic.

Clarence House The Vase

Clarence House The Vase by David Hicks is an iconic Chinoiserie pattern, and has been a favorite of interior designers and myself for years. You most often see it in blue and white. A few years ago Clarence House broadened the colorways to include pastels and such, but generally muted colors that did not blow me away. I thought they had missed the mark on today's modern approach to Chinoiserie with saturated pastels.

They have now expanded their offerings to include 8 bold new wallpaper colors like this hot pink, orange, and lime green.

I am really looking forward to seeing these bright colors featured in rooms. They would be fantastic in smaller spaces like powder rooms in particular.

Yellow and Chinoiserie

Krista Ewart - House Beautiful
Yellow is making a big reappearance this year, and a kitchen or breakfast room is a natural for such a cheery color. The wallpaper here is Clarence House The Vase, an iconic wallpaper that is very hot right now. A Palm Beach lantern and Chinese Chippendale chairs are perfect choices. The black painted floor makes for a great contrast. The built in banquette adds storage space.

The Blue and White Chinoiserie Laundry Room

Kevin Walsh
Since I turned my laundry room into a blue and white Chinoiserie retreat for the One Room Challenge a year and a half ago, I have enjoyed discovering more great laundry rooms that have been elevated from utilitarian to extraordinary.  In addition to doing laundry, a beautifully done laundry room can be the perfect space for a home office, wrapping gifts, crafts, flower arranging, homework, the possibilities are limitless. Recently I toyed with the idea of adding an antique Chinoiserie daybed I saw at auction, but decided that might be too weird.

Here is a fantastic laundry room that includes many of the same features I used in my own laundry room.

*A dramatic wallpaper in blue and white, here the iconic Clarence House The Vase. Since a laundry room is probably not a room wants to use artwork on the walls, a great wallpaper is the perfect solution. I personally think that no color scheme is as fresh and clean and crisp looking as blue and white in a laundry room.

*White cabinetry and white washer and dryer - again, I think white is such a clean look and I am not personally a big fan of washers and dryers in colors.

*A classic black and white tile floor.

*Upscale lighting and accessories.

*Seating.

*A Steele commercial laundry hamper.

Repeating a Fabric

Robert Brown Design
I was interested to see this room by Robert Brown in Adamsleigh Show House using Clarence House The Vase throughout the space.

While repeating a fabric was once the look, the modern approach is using a pattern once in a room. This does seem to be a somewhat dated look to me. What do you think?

Large Scale Wallpaper - The Vase

Tom Scheerer - House Beautiful

I think large scale wallpapers are the most dramatic in smaller spaces like powder rooms, hallways, and foyers. I love Tom Scheerer's use of Clarence House The Vase in the hallway and stairway of his waterfront vacation home in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Below are some other interesting examples.
