The Chinoiserie Bathroom

Gen Sohr - Frederic Magazine

There is really no room in the house that a blue and white Chinese garden stool does not work. Although in many places a garden stool is used primarily to be decorative, in the bathroom or powder room it can be highly functional.

This is such a pretty example of a beautifully done powder room. The showstopper is the vintage gold chinoiserie mirror.

The Blue & White Powder Room

Mark D. Sikes

This chic little powder room is done in Clarence House Las Palmas. Note the blue crown molding. Do you say powder room or powder bath?

The Blue and White Powder Room

Eileen Lane Design

Do you call this space a powder room, a powder bath, a half bath, or a guest bath? I wonder if this difference in terminology is regional? I have always used the term powder room. I love this one whatever you call it. The palm wallpaper and rattan mirror are wonderful. I am also a fan of the baskets with toilet paper and guest towels. Very nice touches for your guests.

The Chinoiserie Bath

Weezie

This darling Weezie ad for their guest towels has wonderful inspiration for a bathroom/powder room. The wallpaper is a favorite of mine, Clarence House The Vase in Pale Blue.

The Chinoiserie Powder Room

Grapevine Interiors

A powder room is the perfect place to splurge without breaking the bank. It is my favorite place in the home to use a chinoiserie wallpaper. Usually not many rolls of wallpaper are required, especially where there is tile or wainscoting on the lower half of the walls, and just one or two fabulous monogrammed hand towels will make quite a statement.

A Chinoiserie Powder Room & Help Solve a Chinoiserie Mystery

Brunschwig & Fils - Xian

Xian by Brunschwig & Fils is a favorite chinoiserie wallpaper and fabric of mine. The detail is wonderful. It's especially great if you want to jazz up a cold and sterile white bathroom or powder room. Imagine the space above without it.

I have it in a different colorway on my breakfast barstools. There are two sleeping pups in the background.

The Navy Chinoiserie Powder Room

Jenkins Baer Interiors

I love every single thing about this powder room. Gracie chinoiserie wallpaper, navy blue walls and woodwork, wainscoting, a sputnik chandelier, that herringbone floor!!!!, a gray dupioni silk roman shade, and that stunning sink are all wonderful. I am sending this to my daughter for her files. Their new Annapolis home is a Georgian Colonial and this powder room is a perfect mix of modern, mid century, and traditional.

Do you have a favorite navy paint color? I don't know what was used here, but I always return to Benjamin Moore Hale Navy. It is such a classic, timeless color that works everywhere. A navy blue room is a perfect kickoff to the Memorial Day weekend.

I have a truckload of river rock coming tomorrow to refresh two of my large garden beds. My landscape refresh is in full gear and the garden is looking lovely.

The Blue and White Powder Room

Kara Miller Interiors

This wonderful powder room features one of my absolute favorite wallpapers - Quadrille Lyford Trellis. The bamboo and cane mirror is perfect. The hand soap looks like Nest's Ocean Mist and Sea Salt. The picture light style fixture is very chic.

Perhaps my favorite element is the vintage Steve McQueen black and white photograph. BTW, using a framed photograph is a great way way to keep a room fresh and modern and edgy and not granny. The photographer was famed war photographer and photojournalist John Dominis for Look magazine.

The Chinoiserie Powder Room

Dunbar Road Design

Here is a darling powder room with many chinoiserie touches. A bamboo pagoda mirror, Greek key sconces, a pagoda embroidered hand towel, and a vintage blue and white Chinese porcelain monkey add so much personality. I have two of these monkeys that I use in my master bath next to the tub. I found them at Goodwill many years ago. They can be used. in so many rooms in so many ways. The wallpaper is Schumacher's Feather Bloom by Celerie Kemble.

Beautiful blue and white chinoiserie wallpaper in this classic powder room with a stunning marble washstand, brass fittings, monogrammed hand towels, and my favorite flower - peonies. A simple gold mirror lets the wallpaper take center stage.

Bang for the Buck

Liz Mearns

Nowhere do you get more decorating bang for the buck than a dramatic chinoiserie wallpaper in a powder room. It requires few rolls of paper and the impact is fabulous. This classic chinoiserie wallpaper is Nanjing by Schumacher. That is one tiny sink and skinny mirror! Note the green soap to match.

The Blue and White Powder Room

Courtney Blanton Interiors

This pretty powder room features Lee Jofa wallpaper, a silver pagoda mirror, and a marble washstand. The paneling provides framing for this beautiful chinoiserie paper.

I do wish the hand towel had a blue monogram. I love white towels, but this looks a tad sad. And the staged flowers tied with a ribbon is just wrong. And is that a silver wine bottle coaster? The staging here is a distraction.

Chinoiserie Guest Towels

Trellis Home Design

The chinoiserie guest towel can make such an impact in a guest bath/powder room, even in a room like this above with a very dramatic wallpaper. I would love to hear your fave sources for chinoiserie guest towels - monogrammed/embroidered/appliqued. Etsy has many wonderful choices. Here is another great example below.

Wallpaper!!!

Brunschwig & Fils Ironing Bored

So, my wallpaper hanger was scheduled September 1st and broke his leg. There are literally no experienced wallpaper hangers in this area. I called a couple of others countless times and they won't even return phone calls. My guy is finally rescheduled for today, but I am keeping my fingers crossed. This is literally my last project here and the house is DONE. I will keep you posted. The wallpaper above is for the laundry room and the one below for the powder room.

AND....he just canceled. You can't make this stuff up - 10 minutes before he was supposed to be here.

Wallpaper & Musings

Katie Ridder - Architectural Digest

Now that I have found a wallpaper hanger, my thoughts have turned again to my darling little bathroom that is awaiting its paper. I came across this photo and love it. The turtle wallpaper is by Katie Ridder and note how they retrofitted the antique mirror with elephant sconces. This really has a British Colonial/Tropical/Island vibe that I adore.

I was on a Zoom yesterday with Amanda Lindroth and Mark Sikes and I was thinking about how THE look in interior design today that they both do beautifully is the chinoiserie, blue and white, wicker, rattan, coastal, island, tropical vibe, that works regardless of where you live. Guess where this powder room above is? Hudson Valley in New York. I remember doing a post several years ago about a home in Norway completely filled with palms and chinoiserie.

I am off down the rabbit hole of my thousands of posts to find it - and voila! This stuck in my brain because the house is in Oslo, Norway where my maternal grandmother was from. So if this is your taste, you don't need to live in the tropics - go for it.

The wallpaper BTW is Turtle Bay by Katie Ridder available in several colorways. I like both of these.

The Chinoiserie Powder Room

Fine & Dandy Co.

A really stunning little jewel box of a powder room featuring emerald green wainscoting and ceiling and yellow Chinoiserie wallcovering with cranes and wisteria. I like the yellow striped towel as well. The black floor and striped glass ceiling fixture add an Art Deco vibe.

Yellow and green is a fresh combination that works beautifully with Chinoiserie.

And my HomeGoods find yesterday - a pink pagoda - definitely not yellow and green, but I am a pink girl always!

The Chinoiserie Bathroom

Brunschwig & Fils Xian

One of my favorite Chinoiserie patterns of all time - Brunschwig & Fils Xian. I have a pair of curtains in this fabric and a pair of Chinese Chippendale counter stools covered in it - looking for spots in the house for them. This bathroom is darling -  the gold mirror, the vanity, and the shelves are all wonderful. I wonder why they left the shelves bare though??? But with a pattern as dramatic as this, one can go pretty minimalist.

On a side note, does anyone have a favorite source for rare/unusual plants? I have a landscape degree and am a master gardener and I'm getting really getting into horticulture down here in Florida - I have been to three botanical gardens in the past two weeks. But of course what I fall in love with are obscure hard to find plants. Would love any favorite sources you might share.
