The Chinoiserie Powder Room

Grapevine Interiors

A powder room is the perfect place to splurge without breaking the bank. It is my favorite place in the home to use a chinoiserie wallpaper. Usually not many rolls of wallpaper are required, especially where there is tile or wainscoting on the lower half of the walls, and just one or two fabulous monogrammed hand towels will make quite a statement.

Citrus Prints & Chinoiserie

James T. Farmer

Citrus prints are everywhere - in home decor and in fashion. This is a wonderful example of how well they play with chinoiserie. Here the very classic Schumacher Citrus Garden is joined with chinoiserie touches like a pair of Chinese garden stools and a vintage ceramic elephant loaded with lemons. Darling ideas for al fresco dining or setting the summer table.

The Blue and White Chinoiserie Bathroom

Folding Chair Design

I love a blue and white bathroom and even better when it has a blue and white Chinese garden stool. The wallpaper is Schumacher's Square Dance along with classic white subway tile. The brass accents too are such a classic.

And a blue and white chinoiserie vignette in my bathroom.

Perfection

Amanda Lindroth

Rarely do I see a room that captures precisely my taste. This is definitely it. I would not change a single solitary thing about it. Let's look at all the amazing elements.

*A pink velvet sofa with bullion fringe - it is actually a corner sofa - see the photo below. I ain't calling this a sectional - LOL. The fabric and trim are Mary McDonald for Schumacher.

*The walls are covered in fabric - Schumacher's Great Barrier Reef.

*That incredible pair of Singerie Blanc de Chine monkeys.

*Layered rugs - a black and white stripe over seagrass matting.

*Palm frond lighting fixture.

*The pale green ceiling.

* A lucite coffee table.

*The oversized faux bamboo sconces.

*The zebra - I am still searching for one of these guys.

*Wicker.

*Seashells.

*Orchids.

This is the perfect color palette of pink and green with touches of black to ground it and a mix of chinoiserie, Hollywood Regency, Palm Beach, island style.

This room is featured in a wonderful interior design book - S is for Style:The Schumacher Book of Decoration.

PS - I found another shot of this room and you can catch a peek of a Slim Aarons photo "Sea Drive" above the mantel.

The Blue and White Chinoiserie Bedroom

Shelley Johnstone Design & Courtney Petit Design

This lovely blue and white bedroom features Schumacher's Marella trellis wallpaper and fabric in Delft. A rattan bar cart works beautifully as a bedside table styled with a double gourd lamp. This home is in Highland Park, Illinois, just south of where I grew up in Lake Forest.

Saturday Inspiration - Blue and White

Amy Berry Design

This elegant and serene living room combines a framed blue and white Chinoiserie panel and a collection of blue and white Chinese porcelain.

And more delightful blue and white. This fabric is Schumacher's Hellene with Ming vases and Staffordshire dogs. My daughter will love this as she collects both. It is also available as wallpaper and in other colorways.

The Eclectic Chinoiserie Dining Room

Kendall Simmons Interiors

Many interesting choices here. Chinese Chippendale chairs are mixed with a green velvet settee and oversized white slipcovered chairs. A collection of blue and white Chinese porcelain tops the dining table. A fiddle leaf fig sits in one corner. The wallpaper is a mid-century classic - Queen of Spain by Schumacher here in black and white. This iconic wallcovering was introduced in 1963.

Dated?

Mary McDonald - Schumacher
Personally, I love curtains with a floral design and an elaborate trim but rarely use it. It seems too chintz/eighties/Mario Buatta for today's homes and tastes. I tend much more towards silk, linen, or velvet in a solid with a simpler trim like Greek key. What are your thoughts?

Greek Key Wallpaper

Greek key is available in fabric and trim, but now there is a wonderful wallpaper too. Schumacher's Greek Key Stripe in a timeless Greek key motif is block printed in an openly spaced, double stripe pattern, creating a dramatic effect with a look that is both modern and classical. Colorations range from softer shades of Oyster, Water Blue and Straw on ivory to bold Navy on white and earthy Tabac on a craft paper tan ground.

Alessandra Branca for Schumacher

Alessandra Branca has just debuted her line of fabrics for Schumacher and it comes as no surprise that it is fabulous. With dramatic scales and a vivid color palette, the fabrics are sophisticated and classic, yet modern and fun. My favorite shown below is Coromandel. If you are drawn to deeply saturated colors - think Miles Redd rooms - you will love these. I also like her Bianca Stripe and Andrea Velvet Strie as I love to combine Chinoiserie and stripes. Enjoy the photo gallery of some of my favorites below and see the entire line here. Note - red, fuchsia, and Prussian blue are repeated throughout the collection, so if you enjoy these colors, you are in for a treat. I can't wait to see interior designers doing lacquered walls in Chinese Red, hot pink, black, and Prussian blue with curtains, bed linens, headboards, pillows, and such in Coromandel.

Mary McDonald for Schumacher

Filled with Chinoiserie, Greek key, and fretwork, in colors like navy, orange, jade green, and blush pink, Mary McDonald's collection for Schumacher is sensational. Speaking of curtains with Greek key trim (my post earlier today), look how she has edged Chinois Palais, derived from antique Chinese hand painted silk mural panels with Greek key trim and fretwork trim. See the entire collection here.
