Calamondin citrus trees pictured above are cold hardy citrus (hardy to 20 degrees F.) that are a cross between a mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata, tangerine, or Satsuma) and a kumquat (Fortunella margarita). Calamondin citrus trees were introduced from China to the U.S. around 1900. Used in the United States primarily for ornamental purposes and often as a bonsai specimen, Calamondin trees are cultivated throughout southern Asia and Malaysia, India, and the Philippines for their citrus juice. Since the 1960’s, potted calamondin citrus trees have been shipped from southern Florida to other areas of North America for use as houseplants; Israel does much the same thing for the European market.

I've decided to turn my attention to a bit more landscaping. This time of year is great for planting in South Florida as the rainy season is starting and the rain helps the plants to settle in. I'll be focusing on the front of the property. The rainy season here equates to the chance of a late afternoon downpour.

Citrus prints are everywhere - in home decor and in fashion. This is a wonderful example of how well they play with chinoiserie. Here the very classic Schumacher Citrus Garden is joined with chinoiserie touches like a pair of Chinese garden stools and a vintage ceramic elephant loaded with lemons. Darling ideas for al fresco dining or setting the summer table.

I was watching HGTV and for a Palm Springs flip, they planted several citrus trees and called it a cocktail grove - I love this idea. I would like them in a section of my garden in large blue and white Chinese fishbowls - a chinoiserie cocktail grove.

There are several varieties I would love to explore finding here including Meyer lemon, Kaffir lime, and the variegated Pink Lemonade. Another fun project!
