The Chinoiserie Dining Room

Liz Caan

This is an intriguing dining room by Liz Caan featuring a favorite chinoiserie fabric of mine - Quadrille's Paradise Background in Black on Tint. A farmhouse dining table paired with cane wingback dining chairs is lit by a white and brass ring chandelier. I like the unexpected choice of the pink velvet on the chairs.

One Room Challenge: In the Pink

I had lots of fun this week adding color to my kitchen. With the mint green walls and green counters and floors, I decided to add my two favorite colors, pink and blue.

The gallery wall is close to completion. It includes from top to bottom, an elephant and a pagoda from The Pink Pagoda, a favorite Mother's Day card from my daughter, a Marilyn Monroe crayon sketch on a Paul Bocuse recipe from a favorite French artist, a Kate Spade card, an abstract by artist Kerry Steele, a vintage Brunschwig & Fils magazine ad, an Anne Harwell ginger jar print, and a vintage cork painting. The Kate Spade card came in the box with something I ordered. It says: "She is quick and curious and playful and strong."

Yesterday, I had the window treatment installed. It is a roman shade in Quadrille's Paradise Background in Raspberry on Tint. Perfection! It was done for me by Paul Johnson of Paul David Design.

The last two shots are of my counters that I am starting to play around with - you will see them finished next week. The three little Kate Spade posy vases are darling and ideal with my color scheme.

Now go see what my co-conspirators have been up to this week:

Modern Chinoiserie

Fabulous modern take on Chinoiserie in this bedroom featured in the book Decorate by Holly Becker and Joanna Copestick. Don't know why the duvet pattern (Quadrille/China Seas Paradise Background in Raspberry on Tint) is upside down though!

Great Chinoiserie Rooms That Break the Rules in Style

Today we begin our new series on Great Chinoiserie Rooms That Break the Rules in Style. The decorating rule that you shouldn't mix other patterns with a bold large scale wallpaper was beautifully ignored here by interior designer Pat Healing of HB Home in the October issue of House Beautiful. By sticking with a color palette of blue, black, and white, Pat has combined the iconic Chinoiserie pattern Quadrille Paradise Background with Quadrille Meloire Reverse on the sofa, a black and white striped rug, black and white bedding, a bold and funky black and white pillow (studio bon's Bang in Black), and a geometric black and white fabric for the curtains.

August Ideabook on Houzz-Orange and Turquoise Chinoiserie

My new Ideabook for Houzz is up and it is great fun if you love orange and turquoise Chinoiserie. Just click on my Houzz link in my sidebar. And yes, this post does have a pagoda hook since this is pagoda week on CC. This stunning bedroom by Kendall Wilkinson (who will be a featured interior designer in my new series) has pagoda cornices for the window treatments and the fabric Quadrille Paradise Background in Orange on Tint also features pagodas.

Barry Dixon Beach Chinoiserie

Barry Dixon created this exquisite living room-my favorite for a beach house-using Quadrille Paradise Background in Turquoise for pillows and draperies. I love the palette of pale aqua and turquoise that extends into the kitchen. The daybed is a wonderful choice-it works for an extra guest and is such a chic look.

Pagoda Headboard

This headboard would be absolutely amazing reupholstered in one of our favorite Chinoiserie fabrics. Available on Etsy from LIVvintage here. I'm thinking Quadrille's Paradise Background or China Seas Lyford Background would be wonderful. Any other ideas? (Update-it sold!)

The Greek Key Bolster

As you can see, my Photobucket account has been down for over a day, so I did not post yesterday I was so annoyed. Hope this gets resolved soon.

I am having great fun working on a few interior design projects for my own home. First, I just received the beautiful leopard velvet epingle fabric I got on Mary McDonald's Tastemaker Tag Sale on One Kings Lane. I will have my dining room chairs upholstered in it, then I will be ready for my dining room reveal. Second, I am having a roman shade made for my kitchen in Quadrille Paradise Background Raspberry on Tint. Lastly, I am glamming up my already pretty glamorous dressing room. New additions are two large blue and white ginger jars, two gorgeous Art Nouveau gilt chairs I won at a local auction that I am having upholstered in leopard velvet (the velvet looks very much like Scalamandre Leopardo without the price tag), and a stunning Greek key bolster pillow I just ordered from Furbish Studio. I love the combination of Greek key and Chinoiserie, as you can see from my blog design. (If you could see my blog design, that is.) Just above and below are great examples from Sara Tuttle and Mary McDonald showing how Greek key bolsters are the perfect addition to any room. I will post on these projects as I complete them.

The Top Chinoiserie Fabrics #4 & #5

Two of my very favorite Chinoiserie fabrics are Quadrille's Paradise Background and their China Seas Collection Lyford Background. They take their place on my list of the best Chinoiserie fabrics. Many bloggers and even interior designers confuse the two patterns, which are quite close. I was thrilled to get the Paradise Background in Raspberry on Tint pictured above from Shannon Darby of Pink Wallpaper on Tuesday from her online shop The Designer's Attic. My Chinoiserie fabric stash runneth over! Below are wonderful examples of how designers use these fabrics as well as all the colorways of each so that you will be able to distinguish the two. No matter how these patterns are used-pillows, a headboard, window treatments, a tablecloth, or chairs, they instantly become the focal point of a room.
