Tulipieres, as the name indicates, were originally created to hold tulips. Tulipieres originated in 17th century London during the height of tulip mania.

I know we all love tulipieres. Also known as tulip bowls, tulipiere vessels are ornate ceramic pieces featuring several different spouts that hold blooms (traditionally tulips) individually. Tulipieres are self-arranging floral vessels. Dating to the early 17th century, tulipieres were designed to display the blooms of prized tulip bulbs.

How I love a great screened in porch - my lanai is a favorite space at CCC. I have a wall of sliders that open to the lanai and love to keep them open. This example above is so pretty with its Haint blue ceiling and painted wood floor.

Architectural Anomolies

Hallway in My Florida Home

The Florida house has a few odd odd features, as do many homes. It has three of these arched niches which are somewhat dated. Rather than spend money on filling them in, I decided to keep them and work with them.  I was also determined to use my existing art as I love it all - these above were done by Jennifer at The Pink Pagoda and I had them in my office in Alexandria previously. I got them for one of the One Room Challenges I participated in. This is the hallway of the master suite in Florida. I think they work beautifully.

Another Arched Niche

This niche I filled with framed antique Chinese silk costume fragments - I like the contrast with the massive framed photograph of a Vatican staircase in the landing. And a favorite ginger jar is on a ledge in the staircase.

I love the way these work.

This last one holds a favorite piece of mine I purchased in Old Town Alexandria long ago at a wonderful store called The Pineapple, now long gone. It fits the space like it was meant to be there.

It is a shame that tulipieres are so hard to find. I am fortunate to have three and they are favorites of mine for flower arranging.  I especially love them in the spring with tulips, but I found the arrangement here quite lovely.

Pagoda Shaped Tulipieres

I adore pagoda shaped tulipieres. They make a bold architectural statement on a dining room sideboard, entryway table, or fireplace mantel. Moreover, they are a dream for easy and dramatic floral arranging. Antique versions are very pricey and extremely hard to find. These modern versions are wonderful.
