Furlow Gatewood

Furlow Gatewood - Veranda

The interior design world lost a legend over the weekend. Furlow Gatewood's love for chinoiserie, antiques, animals, dogs, gardening, and of course interior design all made him one of my favorites. He was as well a true Southern gentleman, handsome, smart, mannered, and kind. He died unexpectedly at the age of 101, leaving the design world far lesser for his absence.

Lace for the Holidays

Red Guipure Lace Daphne Dress

Lace is such a pretty choice for holiday dressing, and I have rounded up some favorites. All of these are very versatile, and could be worn to a variety of holiday events and parties from luncheons to New Year's Eve, depending how you style them.

This is such a beautiful vignette combining two things I love - chinoiserie and horses.

Changing Up the Chinese Lamp

Robert Kime and Piers von Westenholz

A patterned fabric lampshade is a wonderful way to change/refresh the look of your Chinese lamp. This is a very high end designer look that is really having a moment. Whether it's for a blue and white Chinese lamp or a solid color Chinese gourd lamp, it will really add a wow factor to a room. You will be surprised the impact it can have. Red looks wonderful with a blue and white lamp as shown here.

I Spy

Furlow Gatewood

Who else spots the ceiling fan? Also, the lamp on a stand? Two interesting elements in this wonderful blue and white Chinoiserie filled room.

The Chinoiserie Dog - We're Home!

Furlow Gatewood

We arrived back home yesterday from a whirlwind trip to Pittsburgh. We stayed at the Omni William Penn and ate at Butcher and the Rye on Wednesday, then yesterday we picked up this little angel at the breeder and back to DC. It was Kate and my first time in Pittsburgh and we loved it! She's eating great and slept all night, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that she will settle in easily.

One Man's Folly

Some of you may recall this cover from Veranda with a dining room in one of the homes of Furlow Gatewood. It is a great favorite of mine. A new book on Furlow Gatewood by Julia Reed called One Man's Folly is at the top of my book list.

One Man's Folly

Here are some photos of the wonderful homes of Furlow Gatewood filled with dogs, peacocks, and Chinoiserie.

Thanks so much for all of the emails and comments I received on yesterday's post about the death of my dearest friend. They mean so much to me.
