Memorial Day falls a bit early this year with Memorial Day weekend kicking off on the 23rd. One of my favorite ideas for decorating the table or sideboard is these pagoda lanterns. They are available in red, white, and two different blues. I love using them with battery pillar candles.

Memorial Day is right around the corner. Setting the Memorial Day table is a no-brainer for the lover of chinoiserie. Use blue and white Chinese porcelain as your centerpiece(s). Fill blue and white ginger jars, cachepots, or vases with red, white, and/or blue flowers - roses, tulips, carnations, hydrangeas, lilies are all beautiful and easily found.

I will be the first to admit that I find the majority of red, white and blue rooms unsophisticated, but that is certainly not the case here. The key to me is lots of blue and white and just touches of red.

This is a wonderful red, white, and blue vignette with chinoiserie elements. I love the blue and white vase filled with anemones. Anemones are such a great flower. They are part of the Ranunculaceae family, originating from China and Japan. I especially like white ones with dark centers and think they pair beautifully with blue and white Chinese porcelain.

The wallpaper is de Gournay Earlham custom colored in cobalt blue, paired with trim and bookcases lacquered in red. This is fun inspiration for setting the red, white, and blue table for Memorial Day celebrating. Small vases with flowers are a chic choice and have a lower profile. I always wonder how people see each other with tall floral centerpieces.

 Red, white and blue rooms are so often not done well, but this one is perfection, from the marble clad tub to the Moroccan trellis wallpaper, the blue and white Chinese cachepot with an orchid and that red pagoda mirror. Seriously Chinoiserie Chic! I love the navy and white striped soap dispenser too - a wonderful little nautical touch.

Red, white and blue, perhaps more than any other color combination, can go so terribly wrong, looking kitschy and tacky and not at all sophisticated and elegant. But done well, it can be a wonderful combination - classic, crisp, and preppy.

In honor of Memorial Day weekend, I thought it might be fun to show some red, white, and blue Chinoiserie rooms that are elegant and not kitschy which is indeed a delicate balance. You don't want your house to end up looking like the Star Spangled Banner.

The Mary McDonald hall above is gorgeous with its blue and white Chinese fish bowls filled with lemon topiaries. The billowy red linen curtains are lovely and not fussy. No Miles Redd ruffles here.

I think the key is to keep the red as pops of color, not dominant.

I hope everyone enjoys their holiday weekend as much as possible. Another pandemic change - I carried out a Costco pizza last night and only cheese or pepperoni - "everything" on it not available. But the pepperoni one was still great.

Chinoiserie Gone Wrong

I suspect that the interior designer here was trying to combine Country and Chinoiserie, but it does not work at all. That glamorous chandelier and that log cabin braided rug are about the worst mismatch imaginable. IMHO, trying to meld these two styles is an impossible task to begin with, which is why you never see it. The room needs a serious intervention. It's having an identity crisis. And BTW, this room was published in Traditional Home.

I REALLY DISLIKE -

The Little House on the Prairie braided rug - this is really what ruins the room for me.
The plates on the wall
The beige wall color
The badly tarnished platters on the wall - has she not heard of silver polish?
Those odd diagonal stripe curtains
The too small ceiling cap for the chandelier
Those red, mint, and blue pillows
The ugly clunky vase in an even uglier color green
The dinky crown molding
The table
Overdone palette of red, white, and blue

I LIKE -

The red Chinese Chippendale chairs
The beaded chandelier
The banquette with Chinoiserie fabric although the back is too high and does not look comfy
The built-ins (but the china, etc. doesn't have to be all white/boring)
The floors

LET'S SUBSTITUTE -

A sisal rug
A blue and white Chinese porcelain vase on the table for the tulips
Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray (soft blue/gray) on the walls
A mix of blue and white porcelain and white in the built-ins
White linen curtains with a hefty navy and white trim
Larger crown molding
A table with a less busy base
Pillows in a solid color velvet

What are your thoughts on this room? Love it? Hate it? Just don't quarantine me in it, please. And burn the rug, I beg of you.
