The Blue and White Chinoiserie Lamp

Pair of Birds and Branches Blue and White Chinoiserie Lamps

I think every room deserves a blue and white chinoiserie lamp. Whether gracing an entryway table, a dining room console, a bedroom side table, or next to a sofa or chair, a blue and white chinoiserie lamp will add a subtle elegance. These are all perfect for a little room refresh. Many of these are sold in pairs, ideal for a console table or flanking a sofa or bed.

120 Items Every Beautiful Home Should Have - #2

House Beautiful

Yesterday I referenced a House Beautiful article on the 120 items every beautiful home should have and how a great number are Chinoiserie. Number 2 on their list is the gourd lamp. This is actually a modern version of the Chinese double gourd lamp made wildly popular by Christopher Spitzmiller. Although his are not for every budget, lovely versions can be found for very little at stores like Target and HomeGoods.

This lamp works everywhere from the foyer to the living room, dining room, bedroom, and workspace and is at home in a modern space as traditional. Below is a gorgeous Miles Redd bedroom from Domino several years back featuring a pair of double gourd lamps. This is the room that put the double gourd lamp on my radar screen and perhaps yours as well.

Miles Redd

The wallpaper is de Gournay, the lamps are Christopher Spitzmiller, the silk taffeta curtains feature Miles' signatures ruffles, the zig zag rug is Madeline Weinrib, the canopy bed is a an iron campaign style. A lovely version of this bed is available at Anthropologie.

So this wonderful room combines Chinoiserie wallpaper and the double gourd lamp.

Blue and White

Cathy Kinkaid
Another stunning room by Dallas designer Cathy Kinkaid - a classic blue and white bedroom. Chinoiserie elements include the double gourd Chinese lamp and the blue and white Chinese porcelain plates and vases on the wall. The yellow neck rolls add great pops of color. I especially love the black and gold brackets that hold the Chinese vases.

Saturday Inspiration - Stripes & Chinoiserie

Elle Decor
In this lovely blue and yellow guest room overlooking the Long Island Sound, textile designer Susan Harris uses fabrics from her firm SeaCloth with a vintage French rattan bureau, vintage rattan bedside tables, and oversized double gourd lamps to create a wonderful space. The striped fabric is called Boardwalk. The yellow and white striped rug is from Country Swedish.

If you'd like more inspiration on combining stripes and Chinoiserie, I have a Pinterest board here.

WOW!!!!! High/Low

Pair of Double Gourd Marbleized Lamps

Pair of Double Gourd Marbleized Lamps

The Chinese double gourd lamp has become an icon of interior design. They are now available in a marbleized version that I adore! One of these is $185.95 for a set of two. The other is $2,665 for one or $5,330 for a pair. Can you guess which is which?

For those of you who are loyal followers of CC, you know the answer is that the budget friendly pair is the blue and white. They were on Joss & Main a couple of weeks ago and I posted on them and I am still getting emails from people who missed the sale trying to track them down. Well, they are back! Find them here.

The red and white pair are by Christopher Spitzmiller. I'm sorry, they are beautiful, but I can't imagine spending 5 grand on a pair of lamps even if I had that kind of money.

The Joss & Main are also available in black and white. BTW, they are the same size with the Joss & Main measuring 32" and the Spitzmiller 30.5". These are an amazing High/Low, don't you agree?
