The Chinoiserie Dressing Room

Danielle Rollins - Veranda

This post is a real favorite of mine. Some of you may recall that in my home in Alexandria, Virginia, I had converted a bedroom into a walk-in closet and it was pink - I color matched the walls to a Thomas Pink shopping bag.

Thomas Pink

Alas, I unfortunately do not have a spare room to convert here in Florida, but I do have a walk-in closet with ten foot ceilings and built-ins that works just fine.

I am loving the idea of a gallery wall in my closet. The Danielle Rollins dressing room is absolutely stunning. I love it all - the coral pink, the Chinese Chippendale casegoods turned into a wardrobe, the slipper chair, the gallery wall, and that monogrammed tote. The straw tote is from Nantucket Monogram & Design, but I don't see it on their website - I hope it is still available.

Danielle color matched the walls to a sadly now discontinued Estee Lauder lipstick "Princess Grace," a gorgeous coral pink. I wish I had purchased a bunch when they came out with it. It is a great color!

In the shots below you can see a vintage wicker and faux bamboo pagoda chandelier, a Chinese garden stool, and a pair of mirrored chests placed back to back topped with plywood, Chinoiserie fabric, and glass.

My goal this weekend is a gallery wall in my closet and styling it. Stay tuned. This has really motivated me. Mine will be far less luxe, but this is wonderful inspiration.

The Chinoiserie Dressing Room

Domino

The dressing room is a favorite space for me for to use Chinoiserie wallpaper. It takes a modest amount of wallpaper - often just one wall and it is an ideal spot to go all out pretty and feminine. The marble floor and bench are wonderful features as well.

The Chinoiserie Dressing Nook

Sarah Bartholomew

A lovely spot featuring a vanity chair upholstered in Brunschwig & Fils Les Touches banded in green, matchstick blinds, a blue and white Chinese cachepot with an orchid, and a gold mirror layered in front of the window and blinds.

The Chinoiserie Dressing Room

Maya Nairn home in Austin - Domino
I have posted on many dressing rooms with Chinoiserie style, but this has become an instant favorite. I'd love to see other shots of it, but I am loving the -

*Chinoiserie wallpaper
*Coral bench
*Marble floor

The hand painted Chinoiserie wallpaper is from Richard Holton of Holton Arts. I don't think there is a better spot in the home to use a hand painted Chinoiserie wallpaper than a woman's dressing room. It is much more cost effective, with a smaller space to deal with, and can be used on just one wall. It is also a great room to go unabashedly feminine, regardless of the aesthetic of the rest of your abode.

This dressing room in the Hong Kong home of Fiona Kotur boasts walls covered in hand painted silk and an ottoman in green velvet by Lee Jofa. The dressing room is such a great spot for Chinoiserie wallpaper,  here are some other favorites of mine.

A Chic Nook

Such a great little nook - I love the Cole & Son Palm Jungle wallpaper, the black and white toile on the stool, and the handbags hung from hooks - both functional and darling.

The Chinoiserie Dressing Room

Jewelry Designer Stephanie Lake
I am an absolute sucker for a beautiful dressing room and this is absolutely killer. Can you find the Chinoiserie touches? They include a Chinese Chippendale mirror, a turquoise foo dog, a turquoise Chinese man figurine, a turquoise lacquer box, a blue and white Chinese porcelain vase used as a container, a Chinese wooden stand, and my favorite, a dragon above the window. Speaking of the window, check out the gorgeous silk taffeta window treatment all corseted up like a ball gown. I adore the dark walls and the pale blue leather slipper chair, vanity, and vanity chair. The modern rug in purple, orange, and white is a fabulous and unexpected touch. A touch of leopard, of course. Quite a Mary McDonald vibe here. Thanks so much for the head's up from Ellen of Color Calling that this is the vanity of jewelry designer Stephanie Lake featured in Decorati.

Miles Redd, Pink, and Chinoiserie

Miles Redd
This is quite fabulous - love the pink wallpaper, pink ranunculus, blanc de Chine, gold mirror, pink tufted vanity chair, wonderful mirrored fretwork on the bottom of the walls, pink silk lampshades on the sconces, Jo Malone perfumes, I'm even cool with his ruffles here on the dressing table.

Mary McDonald Dressing Room

This Mary McDonald dressing room is such a showstopper. Note the fabulous Osborne & Little flame stitch wallpaper, the tufted bench, the handbags hung from hooks in the closet, the mint green ceiling, and my favorite - the pair of pink and brown antique French Aubusson Chinoiserie chairs.

Chinoiserie Attic Dressing Room

Net Vibes
How's this for some Monday morning inspiration? An awkward attic space has been turned into a fabulous Chinoiserie dressing room with metallic Chinoiserie wallpaper, low bookcases, metal rods, wallpapered storage, and silver and gold touches.

Before and After???

I am always intrigued when I find different photos of the same room. In Aerin Lauder's dressing room above and below, we can see that there have been big changes in the chandelier and furniture. But what fascinates me is that the silk taffeta curtains and Gracie wallpaper above are decidedly green, while the same curtains and wallpaper below are a pale blue/green. Is this just a matter of different lighting or has it been photoshopped? Quite interesting, right?

My Favorite Chinoiserie Dressing Room

Aerin Lauder
This week, in honor of my 3 year blog anniversary, I am looking back at some of my all time favorites. Yesterday, we looked at my favorite Chinoiserie bedroom by Miles Redd. Today's pick is this dressing room belonging to Aerin Lauder. She uses it as a dressing room, a closet, and an office. It includes hand painted Chinoiserie wallpaper by Gracie, a Venetian mirror from her grandmother Estee Lauder, a chandelier from a Paris auction, and a magnificent Italian brass Z desk circa 1970 by designer and architect Gabriella Crespi.

I'm A Giant Challenge - The Hollywood Regency Dressing Room

My dressing room is very Hollywood Regency glam - quite Mary McDonald inspired. I apologize for the mess - I was out shopping yesterday and out late last night for dinner and dancing, and I haven't put away all my shopping bags and clothes. Here's an overview of the details in the room:

Chinoiserie wallpaper - very Gracie - is Caspari wrapping paper
An Alice Zinn signed leopard rug
An iconic Barcelona bench
A gold faux bamboo mirror
Vintage Vogue magazines atop a vintage revolving coffee table with gold tipped legs and green marble top
A vintage mannequin
Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman shopping bags
Black stilettos
Window treatments made from antique Chinese hand embroidered silk
Recessed lights
Peekaboo bra and panties

The Chinoiserie Dressing Room - Meg Braff

A dressing room can be a multifunctional space as Meg Braff demonstrates here. The dressing room includes comfortable seating, a fireplace, a Bungalow 5 desk that does double duty as a vanity, a concealed television, and lots of closets. Chinoiserie touches include the blue Bob Collins trelliage wallpaper, the Chinoiserie armoire, and lots of blue and white Chinese porcelain.

The Chinoiserie Dressing Room - de Gournay

In this Chinoiserie dressing room from Elle Decor, de Gournay is used on all the walls including the closets, allowing all the closet doors to virtually disappear. Gold paint scribbled on a wall brings in a modern, edgy, and unexpected note.
