Has this blog turned into a cooking show? No, but I do love a great salmon pink paint color and this is it. Benjamin Moore Custis Salmon CW - 215, a historic color found by researchers on the exterior of an 18th century home outside of Williamsburg, Virginia.

Suzanne Kasler used this paint color on one wall only, hanging de Gournay Chinoiserie wallpaper on the lower portions of the other walls. The white is the iconic Benjamin Moore Dove White. The styling of the bookcases is great too - love the brass sconces and the art.

Check out the scalloped wicker daybed. Kasler uses lots of rattan as well in this modern approach to the Palm Beach look. My only complaint is that I wish she had used a bit of blue and white Chinese porcelain on the shelves - it is amazing with salmon pink.

Well, I am off the see the Nationals and the Yankees in Tampa. Spring Training. BTW, the Palm Beach Kips Bay Showhouse runs through March 1.

Chinoiserie Chic Trends 2018

This week we will look at interior design trends predicted for 2018 that work especially well with Chinoiserie. First on my list is the color lavender. Pretty, but less feminine and more sophisticated than pink that has been so popular the last few years, it combines beautifully with Chinoiserie. It is gorgeous paired with blue and white Chinese porcelain and I love it with Chinese red.

The Top Chinoiserie Fabrics #3

Although this fabric is new to the scene, I am convinced that Schumacher's Shantung Silhouette is destined to become a favorite of interior designers. I love Chinoiserie in silhouette-it has such an elegance and simplicity. This fabric reminds me of Quadrille's Paradise Background and Lyford, but its more muted colorways are better suited to homes with softer palettes like my own. Based on Schumacher's classic Chinoiserie pattern "The Jugglers," Schumacher has used a solid background on a lighter weight 100% linen ground and eliminated the pattern detail to create a modern silhouette. I think it is perfection. I predict we will start seeing Southern interior designers who favor softer colors like Phoebe Howard and Suzanne Kasler who have not traditionally used many Chinoiserie patterned fabrics start using this gorgeous fabric. Chinoiserie in the Pink

If money were no object, my Valentine's Day gift choice would be this Elliott Puckette pink gesso and ink painting. The photo above is of the artist and her daughter in their NYC home. But regardless of whether it is a work of art, wall color, or fabric, pink is not just for little girl's bedrooms anymore. Pink is a modern and elegant look for any room, especially those with Chinoiserie elements. Pink is a knockout with virtually any Chinoiserie including blue and white Chinese porcelain, gold, black lacquer, celadon, or Blanc de Chine. In honor of Valentine's Day, here are some of my favorite pink rooms.

Grasscloth

One of my favorite wall treatments for the Chinoiserie room is grasscloth. Green, environmentally friendly, elegant, textural, warm, and sophisticated, it can be made from sea grass, jute, hemp, arrowroot, rush, sisal, or bamboo. It is particularly great in new houses where it gives much needed instant character. Grasscloth comes in every color and can be found screen printed or embroidered in countless or even custom patterns. Interior designers adore the papers of Phillip Jeffries. The Chinoiserie Dining Room

Creating a dining room with Chinoiserie flair does not require new furniture, just some accessorizing. The top five photos of my dining room show how I added Chinoiserie touches to an otherwise traditional space with a pair of black and gold Chinoiserie sconces, pagoda candle holders, and blue and white Chinese porcelain. Also shown is my collection of vintage beaded fruit that, though not Chinoiserie, does add some Tony Duquette style glamor. Click on the photos to enlarge.
