Domino on Newsstands Sort Of - UPDATE
My top two chucklehead corporate moves of all time were the Coca Cola debacle with "new Coke" and the older crowd at Conde Nast not understanding, mismanaging, and then killing Domino magazine. I still miss it. On the stands now is "Domino Best Rooms" available at Target, a special edition with classic Domino rooms and never before seen spaces. I plan to pick it up today and enjoy reading it sipping an old Coke. Here are some of my favorite Domino rooms.
Update - I just returned from Target with my copy and it is truly terrible. Save your $$$.

Mismatched Curtains
![]() |
| Domino |
Above is perhaps my favorite photo from Domino magazine. I reminds me of Kate's apartment with its high ceilings, white walls, wood floors, lots of great colors, and Chinoiserie - here the blanc de Chine on the mantel and bamboo in one of the blanc de Chine vases.
I adore the mismatched Prada inspired curtains and think this would be amazing in her apartment. Not a look for the timid, but fantastic, especially in unlined silk. The colors would be a stunning backdrop for Chinoiserie like blue and white Chinese porcelain, blanc de Chine, or black and gold lacquered furniture.

Chinoiserie Panels How To
I hope you have all checked out the incredible Chinoiserie panels at The Decorator Archives. I am beginning a new series to inspire you on ways to use them in your home. This Barrie Benson dining room featured in Domino shows us a wonderfully modern approach, trimmed out in black molding. Large wallpaper panels like these can be hung directly on the wall as murals or can be mounted on gator foam board so they can move with you. This beautiful panel in the bottom photo is very similar - Royal Garden Cream. It measures 72'' wide by 96" high and is priced at $378.

My Favorite Chinoiserie Living Room
Perhaps my favorite article from Domino Magazine was their March 2008 piece on the apartment of Mary Jane Pool. Pool was one of the best magazine editors of the 20th century. She worked for both Vogue and House & Garden, and served as editor in chief of House & Garden from 1970 to 1980. House & Garden, one of my favorite magazines of all time, was never better than under her exquisite eye for detail. Pool is now 87.
I love these photos of her apartment - wonderful use of color, Venetian antiques, sumptuous fabrics and wallpapers, and the keen mixing of antiques and modern pieces. Note the split photos showing earlier and later versions of the same space. The first four photos are of her living room, but I had to include the rest of her apartment as well it is so lovely.
She incorporates with such style all of my favorite things - hand painted Chinoiserie wallpaper, blue and white Chinese porcelain, lots of books and magazines, painted furniture, mixing modern and antiques, leopard, orange, blue, yellow, coral pink, wonderful mixing of patterns and colors, modern art, silks, oversized lampshades, needlepoint rugs, tufting, brass, and pillows. This is my style and taste - a home that looks as though it were decorated over decades with beautiful things well loved as opposed to looking like an interior designer swooped in and redid it in a day.
Don't miss the orange guest room/study with the leopard carpet. Boy was she ahead of her time.

My Favorite Chinoiserie Bedroom
As part of this week's celebration of CC's three year blog anniversary, we will be taking a look at my Chinoiserie favorites. My favorite Chinoiserie bedroom of all time is Miles Redd's iconic birdcage bedroom. Where do I start? It was featured in my favorite magazine Domino, but then the campaign canopy bed, the de Gournay wallpaper, the ruffled curtains (who but Miles can do ruffled curtains and make them chic?), the Madeline Weinrib zig zag rug, the pair of Christopher Spitzmiller lamps, the white linens, the pair of blue stools nonchalantly piled with a handbag, magazines, and that crazy little bird decoy - this Chinoiserie bedroom is classic and sophisticated, yet modern and fun. It is the essence of the modern approach to Chinoiserie that I strive to bring you each day with Chinoiserie Chic.

The Chinoiserie Dressing Room - Domino
An oldie, but a goodie, Ashley Stark's dressing room featured in March 2006 Domino. Note the Chinese screen and the metal frame chair upholstered in sheepskin.

Chinoiserie Entertaining on the Fourth of July
![]() |
| David Netto in Veranda |
Are you entertaining on the Fourth of July? Few of us likely have a red, white, and blue Chinoiserie dining room, but don't let that stop you from setting your Fourth of July table in red, white, and blue Chinoiserie Chic style. Check your house for things you already have-blanc de Chine, blue and white Chinese porcelain gingers jars, vases, or candlesticks, or blue and white china. Add blue hydrangeas or red carnations, roses, or poppies. Voila!
