This mahjong mat arrived yesterday and I love it. I have seen "designer" mahjong mats lately for as much as $200! This one arrived in one day, rolled and beautifully boxed in a long tall box and no creases. And it is under $30.

Today is my last mahjong class. I can't believe how much progress I have made in 6 weeks. Today we will be playing for money to learn about scoring and we are going to learn to play Siamese mahjong. I have been playing two person or Siamese mahjong online and love it. It's very popular here.

My mahjong class is on summer break this week, so I have been practicing on my own. I decided to explore the mahjong website I Love Mahj and it is excellent. There is a free 2 week trial subscription with no credit card required. Then it is $6 a month or $60 a year. I will definitely subscribe when my trial period is up. The options are limitless for play and practice, and I am making a lot of progress with its myriad of learning options and exercises.

Lots of mahjong this week at CCC. I had my first mahjong class and I watched all of the excellent free online mahjong 101 videos from Southern Sparrow twice to make sure I absorbed it all.

My Winning Hand

My first mahjong class was yesterday and it was excellent. The teacher had us actually playing in very short order. I won the first game we all played and it was a self - picked hand as well. Above is my winning hand. So I am off to a great start. I also began last night watching the excellent free mahjong classes/video series of Southern Sparrow. She makes everything so easy to understand.

Everyone seems to be launching mahjong stores selling all things mahjong, some very pricey, and everything is selling like hotcakes. A seashell mahjong mat that went on sale yesterday for $225 sold out instantly. And waitlists for $500 tile sets.

So I am a huge fan of the iconic L.L.Bean Boat and Tote. I have several and use them for errands, the beach, the farmer's market, a car organizer, and at CCC for dog toys, Christmas ornaments, and my wine tasting things. I thought yesterday about getting a new one to start storing what is sure to become a growing cache of mahjong things. Low and behold I discovered that the L.L.Bean Maine Coast Croquet Boat and Tote is taking the mahjong world by storm.

So I have officially unboxed and styled my very first set of mahjong tiles. They are in a vintage Mottahedeh for Winterthur blue and white Chinese dragon bowl. I have had this bowl for decades and it is a favorite, so I thought it would be a great choice. I love it.
