I received this blue and white Chinese porcelain bowl over the weekend to hold my new set of mahjong tiles. It is huge and stunning and all around fabulous. It sits on a vintage Baker tortoiseshell faux bamboo coffee table in my master bedroom.

As mahjong takes the country by storm, a new trend is the mahjong room. People are converting underused rooms - a dining room, study, or extra bedroom into mahjong or card rooms. I have been seeing lots of examples online, but this is my favorite.

My second mahjong class was yesterday. I must admit that I am learning more from my free online mahjong sources than the in person classes. Having taught both landscape design and wine classes, I know that being an expert in a subject and being able to share that knowledge with others are two different things.

Lots of mahjong this week at CCC. I had my first mahjong class and I watched all of the excellent free online mahjong 101 videos from Southern Sparrow twice to make sure I absorbed it all.

My Winning Hand

My first mahjong class was yesterday and it was excellent. The teacher had us actually playing in very short order. I won the first game we all played and it was a self - picked hand as well. Above is my winning hand. So I am off to a great start. I also began last night watching the excellent free mahjong classes/video series of Southern Sparrow. She makes everything so easy to understand.

I came across this very pretty picture of mahjong tiles in a lovely chinoiserie bowl. I am sure that the lucite boxes that mahjong companies sell are the preferred way to store and display your mahjong tiles, but I love this bowl idea. Lots of people do use decorative bowls for storing and displaying their tiles. Crystal bowls are a popular choice, but I would prefer a chinoiserie option. Mahjong did indeed originate in China.
