A New Chinoiserie Treasure

Skulking around one of my favorite consignment stores on Tuesday, I spotted this gorgeous gold leaf Chinoiserie lamp. I knew it to be a reverse on glass painted and decoupage lamp from the 1940s. I scooped it up for $79 and they were so apologetic that it is missing its lamp shade. Look at two similar pairs I found on 1stdibs - one for $3,900 for the pair and the other $2,800. I think mine is by far nicer. It is 22" tall and in perfect condition. I used to decoupage and I know how much work went into this beauty.

For a lampshade, I think I'm going with a shallow drum shade in dupioni silk - a more modern and unexpected pairing that I like. I always find tall thin lamps the hardest to choose shades for. Here are the color choices below with more shots of my lamp.

1stdibs - $3,900 for the pair

1stdibs - $2,800 for the pair

Bronze

Chocolate Brown

Pistachio Green

Lipstick Red

Brick Red

Seaglass

Silver

Have a favorite color? What lampshade would you choose? I think I'm going with the silver. It's a subtle and elegant choice and will work well in the room it is going in.

Update - Lots of emails and comments on the plates - they are Chelsea House. I love the way they go with the Brunschwig & Fils Xian fabric on the stools.

Now I am Sick

I posted on Sunday about some pieces that I lost out on that I still think about, like this pair of lamps that sold on eBay for $250 shown below. They are now on sale on 1st dibs for $5800. Now that's quite a mark-up! I think I'll pass.

Sunday Inspiration - Chinoiserie Outdoors

I am trying to make a decision on new patio furniture. The good news is that there are so many choices out there - not just dining sets and chaises like the old days, but sectionals, ottomans, daybeds, cuddle seats, upholstered pieces, the list goes on and on. The bad news is that I have yet to find anything I like as much as vintage patio furniture. Check out this fabulous faux bamboo patio set from a Palm Beach estate that sold on 1st dibs.

Elephant Lamps High/Low

I love elephants as you might have guessed from my blog banner. This pair of vintage elephant head lamps above at LIV Vintage are wonderful. I think I would use black lacquered drum lampshades for a very Hollywood Regency/Mary McDonald vibe. The brass pair below at 1st dibs is priced at $2800. The LIV Vintage pair are $300. Please be sure to check out all her finds - she is one of the best sources for vintage Chinoiserie and Hollywood Regency and her prices are great!

The Elephant Console Table

I know that everyone wants to know where they can get the Ruthie Sommers elephant console table in her pool pavilion. The scoop is, it was a vintage piece she got from Assemblage and painted. Here is another one remarkably similar sold by Circa Who. Did Assemblage get it from Circa Who or are these two different tables? At any rate, now you know what to be on the hunt for at estate sales, flea markets, Etsy, or Craigslist. I will see what is out there in the marketplace for an upcoming post. Check out my post below on a great elephant console DIY.

Chinoiserie 2012 - DIY Elephant Console Table

The elephant console table above is $2900 at 1st dibs. All you need to do to make it yourself is to buy a pair of elephant garden stools, new or vintage - these below from Overstock are available in 3 colors and cost $89.99 each. Have wood blocks cut and paint them black. Have glass cut for the top. This would make a fabulous entryway table.
