Saturday is the first day of fall, but here in South Florida we live in the land of endless summer. So autumn and winter wardrobes really just mean adding long sleeves instead of sleeveless and pants in lieu of shorts (if you wish to). I had a lovely day in the garden yesterday and got lots done. I did take an hour to come inside for a great Zoom presentation by Amanda Lindroth. I find many of these interior design zooms I get invitations to are a waste of my time and I either leave it or multi-task, but this one was wonderful. She spent much of it talking about growing up in Florida in the sixties and seventies and Florida style and of course the Bahamas where she is based now. She talked about....

*I was fascinated to learn that she grew up in a stark Danish modern house as did I as our styles now are very similar and not at all like the homes we grew up in. She said she had to learn about pattern and color because her mother slipcovered everything in white cotton duck. The house I lived in during law school was very grand and in the summers the owners pulled up all the antique oriental rugs and covered all the furniture in white cotton duck. It's a great look. Bunny Williams does this in light blue in her Punta Cana home.

*Since moving to Florida, I rarely buy cut flowers and Amanda mentioned how in the Bahamas they are very hard to come by and very expensive, so she cuts palm fronds and bougainvillea and gardenias from the garden. I have lots of palms and bougainvillea, and would love a gardenia bush, but have read they are difficult. I would love to plant one near the lanai to enjoy the smell while sitting out there.

I happened upon this wonderful photo of Lilly Pulitzer on her boat from 1964 here in Florida. When will we be back to those days of relaxing in the sun and the ocean without a care in the world? But check out this boat - Wow. I was researching about the boat, the fabric, etc. and this is what I found from Conde Nast Traveller -

"Pulitzer on her (print-covered) boat. One potential reason for the pose she's striking here? Pulitzer often preferred to go commando (without underwear). It's the reason she insisted that all of her dresses be lined!"

That is a hoot. Who knew? I love that marvelous curved sofa with fringe and a zillion cushions. Not as practical as our Sunbrella today, but so glamorous. How about using Schumacher Chiang Mai Dragon?

House Beautiful online did a piece on hobbies that grandmillenials are taking up, especially during this stay at home period. Examples included needlepoint and flower arranging, both things I love. Another was board games. I used to play lots of backgammon in law school. I love this set featured here. Any idea what it is?

They also mentioned a discontinued Lilly Pulitzer Monopoly set which is apparently crazy collectible. I would love to find this.

I'm debating taking up bridge - very popular down here. I'd love to find a needlepoint card table cover like the one in the top picture.

I looked on eBay and Etsy but didn't find anything yet.

Framing Scarves - My Easy DIY

I apologize for the poor photos, but tropical storm Andrea is making its way up the East coast and it is a very dark and stormy day here, not ideal for picture taking.

When my daughter and I were at Lilly Pulitzer the other day, I spotted a scarf I had wanted on sale. Kate found the same print in a darling strapless dress. The scarf is 18 inches square, an ideal size for framing. I remembered that Ikea's Ribba frame comes in a 19 plus inch square frame that would be perfect. I have read lots of scarf framing DIY online with sewing, pinning, etc., none of which I felt like doing. I figured the static electricity of the glass and the silk would keep the scarf in place and it has. I ironed the scarf, positioned it against the glass, put the mat and backing behind it, and five minutes later it was done. Total cost of $60.00.

I think it came out great and the scarf is not damaged and can easily be switched out whenever I wish. It is a wonderful addition to my gallery wall that has grown very organically starting with the large Helen Frankenthaler.

9 Palm Beach Chic Inspiration Boards

 With the passing of Lilly Pulitzer this past week, Palm Beach style has been very much in the news. I think you will see interior designers feature the Palm Beach look in the next year in homage to her. Coincidentally, I have been doing guest posts over at The Glam Pad the past 2 months featuring my virtual makeover of the historic Chinese Village House in Coral Gables currently on the market. My daughter and I spent a lovely spring day together yesterday with pink cherry blossoms in bloom everywhere. Our day included shopping at Lilly Pulitzer and mojitos before dinner. Over dinner, we spoke about my recent posts on flamingos and my new flamingo print for my office makeover. We talked about vintage Lilly we had in our closets. I was wearing a zebra bracelet and Kate had on neon pink ballet flats. I returned home and watched Mad Men and learned of the passing of Lilly Pulitzer. It was a day that Lilly would have enjoyed.

I grew up wearing Lilly. I stayed up late last night creating a Pinterest board on Lilly Pulitzer, filled with her vintage and modern fashion, as well as her home collection. You can find it here. I was thinking too about the strong influence of Lilly Pulitzer on modern Chinoiserie that I coined the term "Chinoiserie Chic" to describe when I started this blog.

Palm Beach Chic (of which Lilly Pulitzer was and is the essence) and Chinoiserie Chic share so much in common. Elephants, dragons, zebras, monkeys, pink and green, bright saturated pastels of course, but at their essence both are pretty, feminine, preppy, whimsical, exotic, and happy.

At their core what the two share is the sheer joy of life. A famous quote of Lilly's -

"The Lilly girl is always full of surprises. She lives everyday like it's a celebration. Never has a dull moment. And makes every hour a happy hour."

And another -

"Being happy never goes out of style."

So let's celebrate life every day and make every hour a happy hour in her memory.
