Chinoiserie Backgammon

Addison Ross Lacquer Backgammon in Floral

I was absolutely addicted to backgammon when I was in law school. Everyone played. It was the mahjong of that era. I was thinking it would be fun to start playing again. This chinoiserie set is really stunning.

With a lacquered exterior, vibrant suede interior, mother-of-pearl chips, and leather-and-suede shakers, the Addison Ross backgammon set is perfect for showing off on your coffee table or diving into a lively game night. This chinoiserie version would definitely be on my coffee table at all times.

Games with Palm Beach Style

Slim Aarons "Poolside Backgammon"

No beach house is complete without games to play poolside, in the lanai, on the porch, or in the air conditioning after a hot day at the beach. These are such chic choices - too pretty to be stored away. And they can even be monogrammed or personalized.

Fun & Games

Magenta and Orange Acrylic Backgammon Set

Pantone's Color of the Year for 2023 is Magenta, so you will be seeing a lot of this color. This magenta and orange backgammon set is so fun and would look great in my home. It can even be monogrammed. I have played backgammon since I was in law school. This would look wonderful displayed on a coffee table.

Backgammon & Bocce

Backgammon

Summer is a great time for indoor and outdoor games, and there is no reason they can't be chic and stylish and blue!

Classic Blue and White

Eileen Kennedy Design

This is such a pretty example of a blue and white room - traditional but modern. Chinoiserie touches include the pair of Chinese Chippendale chairs, the blue and white Chinese garden stool, and an orchid in a blue and white Chinese bowl. I love that they kept the grandfather clock. The backgammon table is by Oomph.

Beachy Backgammon

Lacquer Raffia Backgammon Set

I have taken up playing backgammon again and have been looking for a beautiful backgammon set for the house. Backgammon boards can be highly collectible.

The game dates back about 5000 years to Iran, and was even banned by the Catholic Church in the sixteenth century. The popularity of backgammon surged in the mid-1960s, in part due to the charisma of Prince Alexis Obolensky who became known as "The Father of Modern Backgammon." "Obe," as he was called by friends, co-founded the International Backgammon Association, which published a set of official rules. He also established the World Backgammon Club of Manhattan, devised a backgammon tournament system in 1963, then organized the first major international backgammon tournament in March 1964, which attracted royalty, celebrities and the press.

Chinoiserie Chic Games

Danielle Rollins

Danielle Rollins posted on Instagram this stunning needlepoint backgammon set she has been giving as client gifts. I love backgammon - I was addicted to playing it in law school. The seashells are too fun. I found the same one on Chairish but it is sold. Perhaps she bought this vintage one and had it reproduced.

Chess & Chinese Chippendale

Printworks

I did a post the other day about the resurgence in popularity of board games with people sheltering at home. I happened upon this photo above. Isn't this chic? The green chess set matches the Chinese Chippendale chairs.

Here are some more pairings I have created.
On eBay

A vintage Lyford Cay Club Needlepoint Backgammon Board on eBay would be great paired with yellow Chinese Chippendale chairs.

Backgammon , Bridge, Board Games

House Beautiful

House Beautiful online did a piece on hobbies that grandmillenials are taking up, especially during this stay at home period. Examples included needlepoint and flower arranging, both things I love. Another was board games. I used to play lots of backgammon in law school. I love this set featured here. Any idea what it is?

They also mentioned a discontinued Lilly Pulitzer Monopoly set which is apparently crazy collectible. I would love to find this.

I'm debating taking up bridge - very popular down here. I'd love to find a needlepoint card table cover like the one in the top picture.

I looked on eBay and Etsy but didn't find anything yet.

This oomph backgammon table is $4,000!

Caspari has some lovely bridge sets like this.

Any ideas?
