Chinoiserie Gone Terribly Wrong

Eric Cortina

I just received the new Gump's San Francisco holiday catalog today in the mail and these are on the cover. Crystal encrusted ginger jars for the holidays - $3,300.00 each. I have no words for how tacky these are. Lyrics from my favorite Annie Lennox song No More "I Love You's" are perfect here - "the language is leaving me in silence. " Speechless. Money and style are not the same thing. Poor ginger jars.

Chinoiserie Stool DIY

Above is Gump's new version of its Palace Stool in black lacquer with an aqua blue seat. It is available for $298.00 plus shipping. I love the Chinoiserie styling and colors, but I think the polyester fabric is a bit tacky. I would opt instead for the Cindy Crawford Collection for JCPenney Trellis Stool for $99.99. I bought one and love it-it is very well made. With a $5.00 can of black paint and a great silk or other high end remnant, you will have an even nicer and much cheaper Chinoiserie piece. But I do love the black and aqua color combination. A great idea to borrow and do your own better version.
