Blue Marbleized Lamp High/Low

Christopher Spitzmiller Single Gourd Delft Blue Marble Lamp Pair

These Christopher Spitzmiller Delft Blue Marble Lamps are gorgeous. His lamps are without question works of art that elevate any room. But at $7,290 for the pair, they are not for most budgets. If you are wondering, the lamp is not marble, but his classic glazed ceramic in a marble design.

Pick Your Quarantine House

This "pick your quarantine house" has many different versions that have been making the rounds on Facebook - there are ones with politicians, actors, singers, historical figures, and the like. This one I found you choose the style house you would choose to be quarantined in. Let's add a Chinoiserie Chic category. We need to come up with five design elements we would include in our Chinoiserie Chic home.

Here's mine:

7. Chinoiserie Chic
Gracie hand painted Chinoiserie wallpaper
A collection of blue and white Chinese porcelain
A pair of Christopher Spitzmiller  lamps
A tufted sofa in navy blue velvet
A collection of interior design coffee table books

Which of these 7 houses would you choose to be quarantined in?

Now let's see your version of the Chinoiserie Chic quarantine house list. I'd love to see what Chinoiserie you would choose.

120 Items Every Beautiful Home Should Have - #2

House Beautiful

Yesterday I referenced a House Beautiful article on the 120 items every beautiful home should have and how a great number are Chinoiserie. Number 2 on their list is the gourd lamp. This is actually a modern version of the Chinese double gourd lamp made wildly popular by Christopher Spitzmiller. Although his are not for every budget, lovely versions can be found for very little at stores like Target and HomeGoods.

This lamp works everywhere from the foyer to the living room, dining room, bedroom, and workspace and is at home in a modern space as traditional. Below is a gorgeous Miles Redd bedroom from Domino several years back featuring a pair of double gourd lamps. This is the room that put the double gourd lamp on my radar screen and perhaps yours as well.

Miles Redd

The wallpaper is de Gournay, the lamps are Christopher Spitzmiller, the silk taffeta curtains feature Miles' signatures ruffles, the zig zag rug is Madeline Weinrib, the canopy bed is a an iron campaign style. A lovely version of this bed is available at Anthropologie.

So this wonderful room combines Chinoiserie wallpaper and the double gourd lamp.

The Chinoiserie Living Room

Kemble Interiors - House Beautiful
A lovely living room vignette by Celerie Kemble and Caroline Irvin. The walls look white in the photo but are actually covered in Phillip Jeffries Japanese Silky Strings wallcovering. A Gracie Chinoiserie panel is a wonderful focal point. The bar cart is by Celerie Kemble for Maitland - Smith. The Hiver metal chair is by Casamidy and is cushioned in green velvet - Holland & Sherry's Diva. The lamp is by Christopher Spitzmiller. The Celestina coffee table is from Kemble Interiors. The bold Greek key rug is by Kyle Bunting, actually not my favorite element in the room. I prefer rugs to be more subtle, and would prefer a sisal here I think.

I love that the bar cart combines faux bamboo, brass, and leather  - so sophisticated and a subtle Chinoiserie touch.

Celerie Kemble for Maitland - Smith

The Hiver chair by Casamidy is a metal faux bois version of a Louis XIV wing chair. Faux bois combines so well with Chinoiserie.

WOW!!!!! High/Low

Pair of Double Gourd Marbleized Lamps

Pair of Double Gourd Marbleized Lamps

The Chinese double gourd lamp has become an icon of interior design. They are now available in a marbleized version that I adore! One of these is $185.95 for a set of two. The other is $2,665 for one or $5,330 for a pair. Can you guess which is which?

For those of you who are loyal followers of CC, you know the answer is that the budget friendly pair is the blue and white. They were on Joss & Main a couple of weeks ago and I posted on them and I am still getting emails from people who missed the sale trying to track them down. Well, they are back! Find them here.

The red and white pair are by Christopher Spitzmiller. I'm sorry, they are beautiful, but I can't imagine spending 5 grand on a pair of lamps even if I had that kind of money.

The Joss & Main are also available in black and white. BTW, they are the same size with the Joss & Main measuring 32" and the Spitzmiller 30.5". These are an amazing High/Low, don't you agree?

Glazed Ceramic Lamps

Miles Redd
I think my realization that a lamp could be a real focal point in a room began with this Miles Redd bedroom with its pair of Christopher Spitzmiller glazed ceramic lamps. Indeed, the Madeline Weinrib zig zag rug, the steel campaign canopy bed, the pop of Hermes orange, the hand painted Chinoiserie wallpaper, and the Christopher Spitzmiller glazed ceramic lamps have all become part of our interior design vocabulary.

When House Beautiful asked me to write a blog post on the subject of "glazed ceramic lamps," this is the room I first thought about with its pair of Spitzmiller lamps. These lamps have become iconic, their timeless and classic forms and bold vibrant glazes transforming any space.

You can see in this House Beautiful room below from the December/January issue what a key interior design element lamps have become, taking center stage in this room. Where for a while table lamps were a bit out of fashion with everyone installing recessed lighting, recessed lights will never have the elegance of a beautiful table lamp. Lamps have become a couture fashion accessory for the home, the jewelry of a room.

I hope all of my Chinoiserie Chic followers have the HB Connect app on your Apple device or Android phone. Look for me and the HB Connect logo in the new December/January issue of House Beautiful to connect to Chinoiserie Chic. This post will be featured in the new issue.

Although Spitzmiller's lamps are favorites of interior designers, they come with a high price tag of $965  to $4,100 per lamp. Robert Abbey sells very well priced versions at about $300 a lamp and even cheaper versions abound in virtually every home furnishings store. Don't overlook vintage ones - I just bought a gorgeous glazed ceramic lamp last week in a local thrift store in mint condition for $15.

It is hard to pick up a shelter magazine today and not find many examples of glazed ceramic lamps, especially with the gourd shape that comes in many variations. I adore these lamps in rooms with Chinoiserie elements. In fact, the gourd is a common Chinese symbol for longevity and good luck. Traditionally, gourds are painted with the Chinese symbol for longevity and displayed in the home to ward off harmful eneregies and promote long life. Designers seem to favor the solid colors, although blue and white Chinese designs add a classic Chinoiserie element.

Here are some favorite rooms of mine with glazed ceramic lamps -

Nancy Taylor Lynch uses a pair of pink triple gourd lamps in an entrance hall with a stunning palette of coral pink
 and lime green

Kendall Wilkinson uses a pair in turquoise on the bedside tables mirroring the color of the walls

I love mixing pink and red as Amanda Nisbet has done here with this pair of red Christopher Spitzmiller double gourd lamps on a living room console table

Bunny Williams uses a lovely lilac color

Meg Braff uses pops of turquoise including these classic single gourd lamps in this living room - I love the buffalo checks on the sofa

A pink double gourd lamp is a lovely touch in this feminine bedroom by Joe Nye

Nick Olsen goes dramatic with these oversized yellow ginger jar glazed ceramic lamps

Soft blue lamps against chocolate brown grasscloth by Palmer Weiss

Why uses sconces in your dining room when you can put a pair of Christopher Spitzmiller lamps on pedestals as done here by Lindsay Reid

Michael Carter uses a soft yellow version in this lovely pastel living room

A pair lend a classic but modern element in this Miles Redd living room

A dramatically oversized pair here by Eric Cohler

Spitzmiller's lamps always have a white paper vellum shade. His lamps require nothing more. But don't think you are
limited to white shades - I love using Chinese red, hot pink, yellow, bright green, orange, or blush pink in silk.
Note the lilac and coral lampshades in the House Beautiful room. A great trick is painting the inside of a paper
shade any color you like or having a fabric shade lined in a contrasting color.

I almost always uses pink light bulbs in a 60 watt or 50 /100 /150 watt - everyone and everything in the room will look great - trust me!

The Campaign Bed

Miles Redd
My big project this week is the delivery of a campaign canopy bed for one of the bedrooms. I love this style bed; it makes such an architectural statement in any bedroom - large or small, feminine or masculine, dressed with fabric or not. So classic! My favorite of course is the wonderful Miles Redd bedroom above with its Chinoiserie wallpaper, Madeline Weinrib zig zag rug, and Christopher Spitzmiller lamps.

My Favorite Chinoiserie Bedroom

As part of this week's celebration of CC's three year blog anniversary, we will be taking a look at my Chinoiserie favorites. My favorite Chinoiserie bedroom of all time is Miles Redd's iconic birdcage bedroom. Where do I start? It was featured in my favorite magazine Domino, but then the campaign canopy bed, the de Gournay wallpaper, the ruffled curtains (who but Miles can do ruffled curtains and make them chic?), the Madeline Weinrib zig zag rug, the pair of Christopher Spitzmiller lamps, the white linens, the pair of blue stools nonchalantly piled with a handbag, magazines, and that crazy little bird decoy - this Chinoiserie bedroom is classic and sophisticated, yet modern and fun. It is the essence of the modern approach to Chinoiserie that I strive to bring you each day with Chinoiserie Chic.

Sunday Inspiration - Miles Redd

Miles Redd
This Chinoiserie bedroom by Miles Redd is utter perfection. I love bedrooms that include Chinoiserie wallpaper, a wrought iron canopy bed left undressed, white bed linens, leopard carpet, a mirrored piece of furniture, and a great pair of lamps. This has it all -
*Canopy bed by Oscar de la Renta Home for Century Furniture
*Leopard carpet by Stark
*Chinoiserie wallpaper by de Gournay
*Bed linens by Schweitzer Linen
*Yellow double gourd lamps by Christopher Spitzmiller
*Mirrored chest
*Antique settee

The Gourd Lamp

The gourd lamp is one of my favorites for the Chinoiserie room. It is a wonderful mix of classic yet modern, fresh but sophisticated. It can be used in a more traditional Chinoiserie room like the bedroom by Joe Nye above to add a modern dose, or to add a jolt of color like the iconic Miles Redd bedroom below. Gourd lamps are everywhere at all price points from HomeGoods to Christoper Spitzmiller's works of art.
