My two favorite containers for real or faux trees in the home are blue and white Chinese fishbowls and nice big chunky handled baskets.
Click here for my previous post on sourcing blue and white Chinese porcelain planters. The photo above is an excellent example of the basket style I like topped with sheet moss.
The braided handled baskets by Mainly Baskets and Pottery Barn are very popular and are great choices.
The above are great baskets, but perhaps you would like something more budget friendly. I have found two I really like. They have the same look and style at a fraction of the price. I ordered this one just below in the large size and it arrives today.
I like to choose a basket about 2/3 the width of the plant's foliage to make it look more realistic and balanced. The larger size of both the above baskets would work with many real and faux trees. You can elevate the original pot in the basket as necessary with old books, or bricks, or an overturned pot. Stuff bubble wrap or old garbage bags or packing material around the original pot to steady and secure it from tipping. Top it with Spanish moss or sheet moss. Since the Zigzag basket has a bit of an open weave, I would line it with a black plastic lawn bag to hide your fittings. Large baskets are also great for blankets, toys, shoes, and such.
