The Blue and White Chinoiserie Kitchen

Scott Snyder

This is quite a kitchen. The Chinese Chippendale table and chairs and the Greek key floor are incredible. And a preemptive strike against the inevitable comments about how this is not practical. Not everyone has little kids and/or spends their days cooking.

Many people carry out or order in or eat out. Many people buy prepared foods and microwave. Many people have outdoor kitchens like here in Florida. A growing trend is a wet and a dry kitchen. Many people today including baby boomers and empty nesters want a kitchen that looks like the rest of their home.

I don't cook. Been there/done that. I use my range once in a blue moon. And I know this is weird, but I have never liked hot food. I love sushi, salads, poke, sandwiches, cold soups, cheese = especially here in South Florida. This designer is based in Palm Beach BTW.

If I redo my kitchen, it will have marble countertops and chinoiserie wallpaper panels and glass and brass shelving.

I wonder what the floor is? Tiled? Painted concrete? Another view.

  1. Cheers to having a kitchen that meets our own style. I think this one is lovely, calming, and beautifully blue.

    1. Let's hope it is the same, since they were bought out before closing.

  3. Simply beautiful all around. If I had to guess, the floors are painted wood which I always liked. There is nothing impractical about this side of the kitchen, (feels like a dining rm) would love to see the actual kitchen side stove/cooktop/ovens/fridge, etc just to have a better idea of how they married the two sides. No reason it couldn't be done to look beautiful and functional.

We have elements in our kitchen which aren't practical but we work around them because we love the design and the finishes. Would I change some things in our next kitchen? Most definitely...that's because we are now settled into our life style and more certain about what makes us happy day-to-day in our home.

There are different trade-offs for all of us and it's crucial to know thyself in all things especially the ones that cannot be easily changed without a lot of money, time and disruption to your life.

    1. I could not find other photos of this kitchen - I'd like to see the rest too.

  4. I love it. A kitchen should be cooked in and I would want to spend all day in this kitchen. The gray counters are lovely against the white cabinets and the floor is everything! Even if it's impractical, if it's Palm Beach, that's probably something for the housekeeper to worry about.

Marble in a kitchen is a hard no for me. Even if you don't cook, we drink a lot of fruity drinks here in Florida. Making drinks with citrus can etch the counters and I do love me a margarita. Even iced tea absolutely requires lemon. There are wonderful quartz products that look enough like marble to suit me.

    1. There is also Quartzite--which is real stone--and looks like marble, but has the properties of granite. Our has been installed for almost 9 years and still looks great. I do a lot of cooking.

    2. Quartzite is exactly what I was thinking. It's gorgeous.

    3. I like quartzite a lot. Not a huge quartz fan.

  5. Just over-the-top gorgeous. I wonder what the tall urn looking thing is sitting on the counter under the arched window. Do you think it's a very fancy coffee maker of some sort?

    1. Not sure about what the urn is, but the color is perfect.

  6. Impractical? I don't see anything impractical about this, and I have two little kids. I don't know what people are letting their kids do that would make this inappropriate. When my twins were on the way I had a few people tell me that I would have to change my house, and of course I didn't, and nothing disastrous happened. If people expect their kids to be wrecking balls in their house and treat them as such, they will be.

    1. I agree completely. I didn't change a thing in my house either.

  7. It could be possible that the floor is custom linoleum. I don't see any lines at all in the floor.

    1. I see faint parallel lines suggesting a hard wood floor. That's only after blowing up the image a bit.

btw, C Roehm has painted hard wood floors in her Charleston house and it looks perfect.

    2. Interesting thoughts on the floor - it is a mystery.

  8. I was thinking linoleum as well. There is a home restorer here in SoCal who uses it in his kitchens all the time. He designs custom patterns and colors for his clients. Beautiful floor in this kitchen.

  9. This thrills my soul. I don't care if it's practical, I'll take beautiful every time. Life is too short to live life any other way but that that makes you feel wonderful. Even if I cooked every day, I don't...or had young children, i do not -- I'd want this fabulous kitchen.

  11. Excuse my oblivion: what is a wet and a dry kitchen? Two different rooms? I think this is the prettiest kitchen I ever saw!

    1. Yes, two different spaces. The wet kitchen is the functional kitchen for heavy cooking. The dry kitchen is for breakfast, snacks, entertaining, coffee, and the like.

  12. This is exquisite. I am thinking hard woods as well and would love to see more photos of the kitchen and what appears to be an adjacent butler’s pantry.
