Palm Trees Indoors

Amanda Lindroth

In this fanciful tropical bedroom, Amanda Lindroth combines many of my favorite things. Wicker and rattan is in abundance - they will continue to be huge trends in 2021 - especially designer versions of these wonderful natural elements. The rattan canopy bed is fantastic and I am a sucker for canopy beds. I always wanted one as a child and my parents refused in their ultra modern mid century home. Note the wicker pagodas and rattan breakfast tray.

Other favorite elements include the palette of pink and green, orchids, seashells, and stripes.

I like her use of faux canvas palm trees mixed with real palm trees. I have an extra blue and white Chinese fish bowl and I love the look of a live palm in a fish bowl topped with moss. Which palm species have you all had good luck with indoors? I think I will venture out to Home Depot and Lowe's today as I am also looking for camellias.

  1. There is a lot going on in this room. It must be staged, or do you think the whole room is this full? I wish one could see all 4 walls.
I never seem to be able to stop when decorating a space, either.

    3. Delta, correct, because I know she has the canvas palms there.

  2. The indoor palm that is most available where I live is the Majesty palm (Ravenea rivularis). They look gorgeous when new shipments arrive at the store, but are a struggle to maintain when you bring them home. I tried one and failed. Looking forward to other suggestions from your readers!

  3. I have had great luck with Kentia palms with good, indirect sunlight in my Southern California home. I do sometimes give them a vacation on a covered patio and hose them down every couple of months after spraying them to diluted dawn detergent to keep any disease away.

    1. Yes, I love Kentias as well, but they are more difficult to find here. And having a lanai makes it very easy as one can rotate plants for mini vacations as you have suggested.

  4. Having visited Fairchild Tropical Gardens last week, my love for the Lipstick Palm is renewed. If only they weren’t so expensive! Have you considered one for your new home?

  5. I have never had any luck w indoor palms! Stopped buying them in the 80s! Matter of fact, I killed a queen palm outdoors too! LOL!
I am considering that fantastic ‘80s palm wallpaper However, have always adored it.

  6. I'm slowly making my way through all the posts I missed while I was moving to a new home... The part about your parents refusing to let you have a canopy bed in their ultra-modern Midcentury home really struck a chord! I too wanted a canopy bed as a child and ended up with an interior-design sense that's wildly different from my parents' (which was very Southwestern). Do you think we gravitated to Chinoiserie Chic because it's so opposite to our parents' taste?

    1. I don't think it was that for me. Their style just never resonated with me.
