Raffia Placemats High/Low

I posted recently about these very chic Tory Burch raffia placemats that are quite fab, but are $198 for a set of 4 which is a bit cray cray if you ask me. I set out to see if there are alternatives at a more sensible price point.

Another view of the Tory Burch placemats

The bad news is these are indeed pretty unique and I did not find any very similar. The good new is I found a few that are in the same genre that I like as well at great prices. See what you think.

These coral spiral woven placemats from Amanda Lindroth are $16.99 for a set of four. They are also available in blue or green. I think getting these is a no brainer.

I found these on Etsy and love them. They too are available in various colors. They are $18.00 each with free shipping on orders over $45.00. If you google raffia placemats on Etsy there are other sellers as well, and lots of different colors including all natural. These remind me a bit of juju hats that I love.

I really like these in all weather wicker by Bunny Williams for Ballard Designs. They are on sale for $44.00 for a set of four. They would be great to use outdoors or inside.

Some great options out there.

  1. Next month I am going to Charleston to visit my sister and will return in November. My son is moving back to Charleston in November so my husband and I will go help babysit or do whatever is needed while they move in. You can find beautifully made sweetgrass baskets and other items. If you have anything in particular you would like for me to look for just let me know. I can go the the market downtown and check it out.

  2. I vote for the Bunny Williams white wicker. The white wicker seems the most classic and timeless. Or go with the spiral woven Amanda Lindroth --- get a set in each of the three colors, pink, green, and blue. How fun! Some of the others are a bit too "of the moment trendy" for my taste.

  4. Just ordered the fringe-edged placemats in all natural on Etsy. I love them! Thanks for the great post, Beth. I love the Tory Burch mats. So unusual. These Etsy makes a wonderful facsimile at a more affordable price. I also happened to find the pouf you bought in Home Goods here in Minnesota yesterday. I snapped it up, too. If I can't live in Florida at least I can have a tropical vibe. I am just so envious of your USDA zone. I am in Zone 4, which is a huge restriction on what I can plant/grow outside.

    1. Zone 4 gardening - OMG. My husband was with the DC office of a Minneapolis law firm for a short period of time and their annual dinner dance was in January. I thought I was going to die. I am on the cusp here of zone 9b/10.

  5. LOVE the Etsy placemats! I have found so many wonderful things on Etsy, and I love the fact that I am supporting an individual artist and buying items that are not mass produced. $198.00 for four pieces of woven straw?! Yes, that is cray cray. Personally, I think that many Tory Burch items are irritatingly over priced. Just my humble opinion. They had a tureen I was interested in purchasing, but it was almost $1,000.00! We're not talking about Herend china, or Astier de Villatte here. I would be interested in knowing ho they determine their price points.

    1. I agree - you are paying for the name which is true of any designer brand, but her prices are especially nuts. Those placemats cost literally nothing to make in Indonesia where they are produced.A skilled worker in Indonesia makes $1,400 a YEAR!!!!!!!

  6. I have two sets of wicker placemats like the Williams Sonoma ones. What I see with the Tory Burch and Etsy placemats is crumbs and spills in all that fringe. They’re cute but...yuck. When food gets down in the crevices I run mine under the faucet and leave them outside to dry. They weren’t hideously expensive so I don’t worry about damaging them. I have a good exterminator, a must here in Florida, but I still don’t want to attract ants and roaches.

    1. I agree on the fringe but no exterminators for me ever inside or out. And interestingly, I have never seen one bug in the house including ghost ants.

  7. I just saw some cute woven chargers and placemats on Pottery Barn - the line is called Tava and they have some square placemats that I love! They also have trays and they’re reasonably priced.
