The Next Chapter and a DIY

Amanda Lindroth

A stunning table set by Amanda Lindroth with a view much like mine will be from my lanai. I love the oversized hurricane and the raffia hand fans on each chair. I am so borrowing this idea. It is hard to see, but they are embroidered with the name of her house, Hope Hill.

Not really sure of the whole naming your house bit, but to each his own. I found the fans at Oriental Trading. I do like the idea of personalizing them, perhaps with my monogram BAC, or CC, or GG with an X through it (just kidding). I wonder if I could use a paint pen? Thoughts?

I found these with appliqués that are fab but $50.00 each. I found iron on appliqués like these on Etsy and Amazon for a few bucks. I bet they could be ironed on or glue gunned.

Oriental Trading Bamboo Fans $17.49 per dozen

Oriental Trading Raffia Fans $25.49 per dozen

I found this great little tutorial on painting hand fans with neon paint from Michaels and a sponge brush and painter's tape. Darling idea. These are for wedding favors - I could pass on the ribbon and tags of course.

The Knot Florida

Today is the walk thru and tomorrow I close. Deliveries are piling up - the Dana Gibson large green bamboo lantern, the Ballard Designs chandelier for the breakfast room, and the Lilly Pulitzer palm chandelier for the vestibule have all been delivered, along with various and sundry other things.

Thursday I meet my painters at the house and the fun begins. I will be bringing over all the Samplize paint samples to try on the walls, ceiling, wainscoting, etc. I can't wait.

Thanks to everywhere who is following along on this journey and for your support and suggestions. You are making this process much more fun. Stay tuned, the best is yet to come.

  1. Etsy has tons of iron-on alphabet appliques you could glue onto the fans. You can choose the monogram letters you want, the styles, colors, size, etc. They even have rhinestone letters if you want to go glitzy. FWIW, I like the bamboo fans best. They look more substantial.

  2. How exciting! Good luck tomorrow. You have purchased 3 of my all time favorite light fixtures. Can't wait to see them installed. Maybe I'll finally pull the trigger and get one. (Although, now they're probably sold out everywhere!! LOL!) I think monogrammed fans are a sweet idea. Had to laugh at the monogram choices!! All the best tomorrow. Cathy

  7. On hot summer days and evenings, the raffia or bamboo fans will be a great addition to your lanai table decor. I am keen on the idea of the appliqués...particularly the flamingo and monstera leaf.

Your journey/story is a fun one!

  8. I don't know how large the fans are but I bet they would be charming as place mats too. Congratulations on your new home! I hope you spend many happy years there.

  9. I'm in love with the light fixture and matching shutters in the Amanda Lindroth room, and I didn't even notice the fans on the chairs until you pointed them out. What a clever idea. Wedding sites always have terrific ideas for entertaining.

    1. That green is her signature color. The hand fans would be very functional on sticky nights here.

  10. Love the painted fans!

So, will you spend your first night in the new place on Wednesday? Or will you wait until everything is painted? When my husband and I bought our house before this one, it closed at 5 pm and we took possession at 6 pm, sleeping bags and overnight case in hand! We were so excited! This one we took possession at noon, and arrived with a moving van. But we didn't have any renovations planned. Those came later.

It's so fun following along with you, thanks so much for sharing. Honestly, I so look forward to your posts every day. I can't wait to see what is ahead for you!

    1. You are so sweet. My two little pups are my babies, and I don't want them around the painting, etc. And my painters are wonderful, but compete perfectionists and they take their time. So I will be going back and forth for the next couple weeks bringing breakables and supervising work, then make sure everything is clean before moving me and the puppies. It will all be ok. My movers are scheduled later in the month.
