A wonderful modern take on a blue and white Chinoiserie dining room by Nashville interior designer Blaire Murfree. An octagonal dining table is topped with a pleated and trimmed table skirt, mid century modern brass dining chairs are mixed with velvet modern ones, dark blue walls and moldings, a burl wood armoire, and a collection of blue and white ginger jars for an eclectic mix. I spy an acrylic bar cart too - another great touch.

This lovely bar cart demonstrates beautifully two hot trends in bar cart styling - art and a lamp. The ginger jar art is from Mitchell Black. I especially like the modern approach to framing in acrylic with stainless standoffs. The turquoise lamp is by Times Two Design.

A piece of art raises the eye visually as well as adding personality and interest. This blue ginger jar is a great way to add Chinoiserie. A lamp adds height and functionality.

I am a sucker for a white kitchen and this one is stunning. I love it all, but especially the lucite barstools and the blue and white Chinese porcelain. The blue and white ginger jar and pair of vases are great examples of how to incorporate  Chinoiserie in your own kitchen.

The 20-Something Flexible Dining Space

Yesterday I posted on the wonderful Manhattan apartment of a twenty-something year old. I love the entire apartment, but was especially inspired by the dining nook. They used a Kartell acrylic gaming table with folding bamboo chairs. For the occasional dinner party for four, extra stored folding bamboo chairs or the Chinese Chippendale chairs from the living room area can be pulled up.

When my twenty-something daughter Kate got her first and current apartment in a stunning historic pre WWII building in DC, we fell in love with its lovely separate dining room with 9 foot ceilings, huge windows, and black and white tile floor overlooking one of the prettiest streets in Georgetown. The truth is, most young singles do not cook or entertain frequently, and it is rarely use.

Kate is looking for her next apartment, and realizes that a separate dining room is not an essential. This dining area above has great ideas to borrow. We both love the idea of a dining nook in the living room that is multi-functional as a work space or for dining or drinks. I also love the reverse spin of the acrylic table as opposed to acrylic ghost chairs used with bamboo and Chinese Chippendale chairs.

Acrylic, Lucite, and Chinoiserie

I love the combination of Lucite/acrylic and Chinoiserie. It adds Hollywood Regency glamour and a modern element without taking up any visual space. It is a perfect choice in a studio apartment or a small room because it tends to disappear in the space. I once used four ghost chairs in a dining room of a client where there was a beautiful water view. You could see right through them from the living room to the water. Well priced choices abound at places like CB2, Ikea, and Target. CB2's Peekaboo Collection has become a classic. I also love the idea of framing Chinoiserie panels in acrylic sheets as Little Green Notebook did shown here for a more modern vibe. If the budget allows, Jonathan Adler's Jacques Collection is amazing.

A lovely mix in this dining room - a Jansen Chinoiserie pagoda chandelier and Osborne & Little's Chinoiserie Bird Cage wallpaper with pink silk taffeta curtains, a mirrored sideboard, antique Swedish chairs, and acrylic chairs. I love the additional touch of pink with the bottles of French sparkling lemonade on the table.

My pick is the Philippe Starck and Eugeni Quitlet Mi Ming Armchair inspired by the classical Quanyi or horseshoe chair. Philippe Starck is of of course the famous French designer of such iconic pieces as the Louis Ghost chair. It is available for $561 plus free shipping. The armrest or fuschou comes in red, black white, or silver (silver is an additional $57.00). I prefer the elegant lines of my pick and the price!
