| Barbara Bush 1991 White House Christmas Tree |
During her tenure as first lady, Barbara Bush, a longtime needle-pointer, made the White House home to a colorful variety of needlepoint decorations. The 1991 White House holiday decorations featured 1,200 needlepoint ornaments and 82 needlepoint houses that formed a village. This was my favorite White House Christmas tree.
Volunteers also made ninety-two needlepoint figurines for a miniature Noah’s Ark, carved by members of the White House staff. The New York Times reported that volunteers contributed 150,000 hours of crafting to complete these decorations. The first lady contributed to the theme as well, making some of the ornaments herself.
Furbish this year has a wonderful collection of needlepoint ornaments now on a great after Christmas sale. And take an extra 20% off at checkout with code MOREMERRY. Find them here. Many are under $10 with the discount code.

lovely, wonder what happened to them?
ReplyDeleteThere is a warehouse where White House Christmas decorations are stored, but perhaps some of these went to the Bush Family or the White House Historical Society.
DeleteMrs. Bush asked the needle pointers at St.Marin’s church in Houston. Texas to make needlepoint ornaments for the trees. Then we were invited to the White House to view. R
ReplyDeleteI lived in DC for many years and saw many WH Christmas trees, but this was my favorite.
