Styling Short Dresses

Black Velvet Whitney Dress

When I post on gorgeous short dresses, often from Tuckernuck, I invariably get comments that they are too short for woman over (fill in the blank) age. My thoughts -

1. The models are often in the 5'10" and taller range. So unless you are quite tall, the dresses will likely be a fine length. I am petite 5'3" and all the Tuckernuck dresses, for example, called "mini" are the perfect length for me.

2. The old rules on what's "age appropriate" are frankly out the window. Wear what you look and feel good in. And many older women still have great legs, so why not show them off?

3. In the fall and winter, wear short dresses with opaque or semi opaque black tights.

4. Wear shorter dresses in the cold weather with high boots.

5. Layer your short dress with a great cardigan sweater.

6. Choose short dresses with long sleeves or high necks.

7. Opt for shoes that are flats or lower heels.

All these tips show less skin, so less "sexy" and less revealing.

Here are some great examples for inspiration on styling shorter dresses -

  1. Good tips except that none of these models are sitting. Tall girl here 5’10”) and these dresses hike way up & turn into tunics or tops when you sit. It’s why when we modeled short dresses we always stood or laid down.

    1. The average American woman is 5'3.5" tall not a model who average 5'9.5" tall. My post was not about models.

  2. I concur Beth! Im 5'2" and the short length is perfect on me. If I wore knee length I'd look sort of dumpy. Right now my legs are best part of me :) Your tip of wearing tights is excellent. It also gives along legged look. thank you for your content all year long! - Linda , NYC
