Surveys show that most people (65%) decorate their homes for Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving. But this year Thanksgiving falls so late - on the 28th, leaving less time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The weekend after Thanksgiving is November 30th and December 1st!
So when will you decorate this year? Will you stick with tradition and wait until after Thanksgiving? I love Christmas decorations, and I love to have them up as long as possible, so I plan to start decorating the week before Thanksgiving. I'm just watching the weather for any late season storms before I put up my outdoor decorations. Hurricane season runs through November 30th and Hurricane Raphael was in the Gulf just yesterday! A crazy and historic hurricane season.
BTW, Publix has gorgeous long stemmed roses on BOGO this week (buy one, get one free), so that's $12.99 for 2 dozen roses.

I'm starting in mid-November since I string lights in the trees on either side of the driveway. It's a big job. Plus we need some light in my community to bring a little hope into people's hearts. Hope you have a happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteI love your comment so much. I am going to follow your lead and start very early - I need some joy and hope.
DeleteI love your empathy. Let the lights shine bright!
ReplyDeleteEach of us can be a shining light.
DeleteIndeed.
ReplyDeleteI, also, need some hope and joy. Though I haven’t been in the “spirit”, all your comments and this post have inspired me to begin my decorating sooner than later.
ReplyDeleteAs Debbie states so well.. Let the lights shine bright!
I found this quote the other day - “Here’s to all the people with different opinions…
ReplyDeleteAnd we’re still friends cause we’re all adults.” In the spirit of the holidays, let’s decorate early and enjoy ALL our friends!
I am taking down my fall decoration in and outside my house this weekend and will start decorating for Christmas the first of the week. I have noticed that since COVID, people have been decorating for Christmas earlier and earlier. Like you, I used to decorate the weekend of Thanksgiving, but now I have everything up and done by Nov. 15th.
ReplyDeleteThere is just something magical about Christmas trees, but because so many things in my life have been especially demanding in the last few years, I'm not sure I have enough intestinal fortitude to put a tree up - and then take it down afterwards. I love picking out a tree, having it delivered, unpacking all my ornaments, then putting everything together. Then comes the denouement when I turn on the tree lights. It's a moment of joy. You are so right about LED lights, Beth. I have several old strings of Christmas lights that I have held onto fiercely, because the LED tree lights are ghastly! I have a huge living room, so I'm not talking about a table top tree here. To take it on all by myself is a major undertaking, so I'll see.
ReplyDeleteI use “real” greenery so I am thrilled with the late Thanksgiving. Because of all the warm sunny days we’ve had in December in Virginia lately I never decorate before Thanksgiving. I hopefully won’t have to replace everything this year.
ReplyDeleteIn need of hope in my heart, I too will start Christmas decorating this coming week. Lovely daughter from Old Town will be here to help. I plan to overdo it this year. Blue and gold ribbons in trees and garlands. Have been looking forward to this since the heat of summer. I have so much to be thankful for.
ReplyDeleteThe hopeful comment brought tears to my eyes. Thank you. It changed my mindset.

Beth, your table with the white roses in the trumpet vase is stunning. I spy the pagodas in the background. Wish I could read the titles of the books. Sigh!!

I travelled at Christmas the last two years, so I didn’t do a tree at home. This year, I’ve already put up the tree and decorated it to the gills with twinkly lights and treasured ornaments. We always leave it up until Epiphany. I plan to savor this year’s tree with special gusto. Because, yes, we must remind ourselves that we are people of the Light! Cheers.
