A Holiday Tradition

Frango Mint Chocolates

When I was growing up in the Chicago area, every Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas dinner would end with a box of Frango Mints from Marshall Field's. And there was always a box under the Christmas tree.

"Frango mints are a brand of chocolate truffles first created for the Frederick & Nelson department stores. Traditionally flavored with mint and widely popularized by the Marshall Field and Company department store, they were later produced and distributed by Macy's department stores.

Historically associated with the Midwestern and Pacific Northwest regions of the United States, the candy is sold in various outlets throughout the country. Frangos were created by Seattle, Washington's Frederick & Nelson department store in 1918; the company and Frango trademarks were both acquired by Chicago's Marshall Field's department store, which introduced its recipe in 1929. Frango mints were produced in large melting pots on the 13th floor of the flagship Marshall Field's store on State Street for 70 years.

In the beginning of 2017, Garrett Popcorn Shops acquired the rights to sell Frango from Macy's."

Frango Mints are still great favorites of mine and I always treat myself to a box this time of year. They also make fabulous Christmas presents, hostess gifts, Secret Santas, and stocking stuffers.

The holiday one pound box retails for $32 and is on sale right now for $11.99 here.

There are lots of other chocolates in the Frango line as well - check them all out here.

I recommend stocking up now at this great Black Friday Preview price. I don't think there is a better gift out there at this price point.

  1. We live in Northern California. Our pre-pandemic tradition was to take the Larkspur Ferry into San Francisco; walk up to Chinatown for dim sum; then to Union Square for the Christmas displays and to buy gift boxes of chocolates. Of course we have to sample for quality control. Then return on the evening ferry with the lights across the Bay. Looking forward to resuming the tradition this year.

    1. Next time my husband and boys ask me what I want for Christmas, I'm going to tell them a day in SF with the family. I live a few minutes from the ferry, and it's also been a few years since we've done a holiday outing to Union Square. Riding the ferry and taking in the spectacular views 9f the bay, mountains, and city is such a treat.

  2. Thanks for the reminder! We bought a few boxes last year after reading about them in your blog. These mints are divine and hard to resist. And yes, a great price point.

  3. I have grown up and lived in the Midwest for most of my life and Frangos were a staple for gifts and then also for after dinner treats. My father would purchase them when they were on sale so that he could bring them to his dealers when he was working--as holiday gifts. They are a special treat.
Thank you for mentioning they are on sale at this time.

  4. This brings back those treasured memories of lunch at Marshall Field's and that iconic Christmas tree! I will be ordering. I have lived in Southern California for 30+ years now, but there was nothing finer than the holidays at Field's and those bottle green delivery trucks!
