Girls Who Love Cars

Morris Minor Convertible

Many people think only men are in to cars, but I have always loved them. My father was a car fanatic. He had a thing for British ones and they were his babies. My dad got me my first car and it was a white Morris Minor convertible like pictured above. It was darling and sort of a precursor of the Volkswagen Bug.

But my favorite car ever was my powder blue BMW 2002 - BTW 2002 was the model, not the year.

BMW 2002

BMW has brought back the 2 Series. The pups have their spa day today in Sarasota so the game plan is to test drive the Bimmer while they are getting groomed. The 2 Series even comes in three different blue paint colors. I am not really a fan of white cars although the vast majority of cars in South Florida are white. I've always loved black cars and my Audi is black, but it's definitely not very "Florida." My only white car was the Moggie as Morris Minors were called.

  1. Thirteen years later I still miss Big Red, our 1995 XL GMC Suburban. We traded her for new brakes for our Expedition as she was twelve years old with close to 290,000 under her hood. She brought three babies home from the hospital and carried them, along with our three canine children, through snowstorms and drive thru Nativity scenes to countless soccer, hockey, and baseball games and practices. Best heater ever, better than the 2003 Caddy I drive now.

    1. Did you drive it? That is one large vehicle. My girlfriend drove a Land Cruiser and had to help me get in to to it is so high!

  2. LUV, love, LOVE BMW's - had a couple of the 5 series sedans - but have now moved on to the X3 - as I like sitting a little higher UP :)

  3. Girl after my own heart, I have a Q7 and my teen girls have an X3 & X5 (hubby has a work car that’s usually American and changes constantly). I really loved my 2004 e320 I drove for years when I commuted into DC (I now work from home) - it was such a beautiful car IMO. Still a sentimental favorite. Sadly it met its end when a teen with her provisional license rear ended me on Route 7; thankfully neither of us were hurt. But I love European cars too. I think once you drive one, it’s really hard to transition to back to non-European. So my teens are probably ruined for life, lol, but they inherited those cars from us.

    1. I was rear ended on Route 7 too - LOL. I have never had an American or Japanese car. I learned to drive on stick shift European sports cars. I should check out the BMW SUVs, but I am really a sedan girl. My Jag dealer in Tysons tried to give me a Land Rover loaner and I refused - I am not used to sitting up high - my Dad drove sports cars and I'm used to low cars.

  4. Oh YES, I love my cars! My father did, too. He started with British, Angelia, then Fiats and to Mercedes. My first car was an 11 year old Mercedes 1959 220S. It was huge, I was tiny, had a sunroof and lots of wood trim. I loved that car and have had several Mercedes since. My current is a 2006 320 CDI with 37,000 miles. It is a keeper. When I asked my father if he had any regrets, his answer was that he didn't buy a BMW that he loved many years before. That was a life well lived!

    1. I haven't seen an Anglia in years. I did have a Fiat. I have never had a Mercedes, but I do like vintage ones.

  5. My white 1967 Porsche 912. Got it for my 30th birthday in the late 70s and drove it until the 90s, when it was basically disintegrating. Boohoooo.

    1. OMG I loved that car. My Dad was sports car crazy. The 912 is so collectible - they were only made for a short time.

  6. What great looking cars those are! They don't merely look like cars, they look like a driving experience. I'm definitely getting your car vibe, Beth.

Over my lifetime, I've had, (1) a small Nissan, which was my starter car, (2) a couple of Fords, (3) a VW - that was a fun car, (4) a Mercedes - very sturdy with straight forward German engineering. I always felt very safe in this car, (5) a Jaguar - beautiful, but not at all comfortable. I am tall and Jaguars are built very close to the ground. The seats were not comfortable either. I felt like I was crammed into a cockpit. This was probably my least favorite car of all of them, (6) a Chevrolet, and now I own a Cadillac DTS, which is an older car, but I love it. It's luxurious, quiet, comfortable, and handles beautifully for a large automobile. Cadillac does not make this model anymore. Automobile makers are coming out with more and more SUV options, along with hybrids and electric cars. I've pretty much run the gamut. Out of all of them, I have to say my favorites were the Mercedes, and the Cadillac. Never had a beamer, but I've always thought them to be stylish and beautiful, along with Audi's. I'm curious to know between Audi and BMW, which one you like better and why?

    Fun post, Beth.

    1. I only drive European cars and have had Volvos, Jaguars, BMWs, and Audis. Loved my Jags, but no longer like the brand. There is no easy answer on the Audi versus BMW question. Both are wonderful. Audi is far more luxurious inside. Not even close. I find Audi's more elegant and understated. But a BMW is definitely more fun to drive. And since I am keeping my Audi that I adore, I think it would be fun to get something different. The 2 Series BMW fits the bill.

  7. Love that Morris Minor convertible!!! Adorable! I had a couple of friends who owned BMW 2002s; I love that blue! I had my Miata for 11 years and loved driving it everywhere. I put 169,000 miles on it and it still ran perfectly. I now have a 4-door Mini Cooper which is not as much fun to drive, but much more practical. Love cars and Formula 1 racing; BMW won the Championship last year.

    1. Miatas are adorable. My daughter has a Mini. Unfortunately, there is not a dealer here - an hour away which is too far for me.

  8. Is it just me, or do you notice that cars all seem to look alike these days, and except for red, they are only available in very neutral colors. They are, for the most part, void of style. That may be what prevents me from buying a new car. (Me thinks it's time for some fun again.)

    1. It depends on the brand - Audi and BMW that I drive come in gorgeous colors and even have tons of custom colors. The BMW I drove yesterday for example comes in blues and even a purple!

  9. I don't see myself as really a car person, but I am very frustrated by the ugly/bland/boring colors offered in the make/model that we like to drive. I would love a really pretty blue--but they only make our care in black, white, a silver gray, an ugly green and a garish shade of blue. I'm hoping for better in the next model year.

    2. You are so fortunate. We always buy Lexus products because we have a great dealership here in Dallas with exceptional service and other perks. Our cars have faultlessly performed--but the colors are so disappointing. I want a pretty blue!!

  10. I adore cars. I get that love of cars from Dad. I have owned a 5 series BMW that car could move! My favorite car was my first--a yellow '67 Mustang convertible with a V8 engine. Very fun car--it could move, too!

  12. I love this blog post Beth! I too, love cars. My grandfather always had the newest Cadillac and I remember thinking as a child "I will own a Cadillac someday!" I have gone though just about all of the brands but my favorites have been my 2010 Cadillac SRX and my current 2018 Lexus GX460, both SUVS. I loved driving my Audi Q7 but it was a nightmare of never-ending electrical problems. I had both the Ford Explorer and the Ford Expedition, they were great for traversing midwestern winters. I loved driving our 2008 BMW 525i, which met an unfortunate end. We also currently have a 2013 Cadillac STX which is so roomy and offers such a smooth ride. I will add the for the sheer fun of brut force, there is nothing more fun to drive than my husband's baby, a 2006 Dodge SRT-10 truck, which holds a 10 cylinder Viper engine. Talk about fun to drive off of the line!

  13. I could just kick myself for ever trading in the red Mustang my father bought for me when I graduated from college. It wasn't the best design year - 1975- but today it would be so much fun to have!
