Peony Tips & Blue and White Spongeware

Tory Burch

Such a lovely tabletop - Tory Burch spongeware and Jardin napkins from her tabletop collection with blue and white Chinese porcelain and pink peonies.

Peony season will be here soon. Here are my tips for making your cut peonies last well.

1. Buy or cut peonies while still in bud form. Already opened ones will not last very long. But don't buy buds that are rock hard - they may not open - look for large soft buds.

2. Cut the stems at an angle under running water.

3. Fill your vase with cold water.

4. Peonies are thirsty flowers - add water daily and change water every other day and make a fresh cut on the stems to keep them taking up water. And they like flower preservative.

5. Keep out of direct sunlight.

6. If you have the space in your fridge, stick the vase with the peonies in the refrigerator at night. Are your peonies looking a little droopy or wilted? Stick the vase in the fridge and they will perk back up.

7. Add a few ice cubes to the water occasionally.

Blue and white spongeware looks great mixed with blue and white Chinese porcelain. Tory Burch has a gorgeous spongeware collection. She recommends mixing and matching new and vintage spongeware. Click here to view the collection.

Here are other blue and white spongeware/splatterware ideas. The terms spongeware and splatterware are often used interchangeably nowadays although they are slightly different techniques and designs.

    1. Too far south to grow here, but Publix imports them and they are often available thankfully.

  4. Peonies are my favorite. I'm fortunate to have so many old estate peonies in my garden. I don't think there's a prettier combination than peonies and blue and white porcelain.

    1. I agree. I grew them in NOVA, but I'm too far south here. They are favorites of mine. I actually prefer tree peonies in the garden.
