The Cutting Board as Kitchen Art

French Country Cottage

I had saved this photo of this stunning kitchen with its blue range, marble topped island, and copper collection. I am especially drawn to the stunning collection of cutting boards - this is kitchen art. Handled cutting boards leaning against a backsplash add a casual elegance that I love. This type is called a French cutting board or paddle cutting board - they are rustic, often made of walnut, pine, or oak. They are used for serving cheese and charcuterie as well as for food prep.

Antique versions are getting harder and harder to find and pricier and pricier. I'm not even sure I like the idea of a used cutting board.

I would love to know your recommendations for beautiful and functional cutting boards, especially with handles like these. These are all new ones. I am thinking about ideas for styling my kitchen as I await my island and appliances.

  1. Love them! I've used them for years—oil them with food-grade mineral oil, maybe twice a year. In culinary school we cleaned and disinfected them by sprinkling a cut lemon with coarse salt and using like a scrub sponge. I also love the bamboo ones.—Shanna

  2. I've seen this picture of Courtney Allison's French kitchen, and it's just beautiful. It's so charming and pretty, really makes me want to cook, and I don't really enjoy cooking! My cutting board is not as fancy as these, but it has rubber feet on the bottom so that the board doesn't slip while I'm using it a nice feature.
