Paint Color Decisions

Sherwin Williams Alabaster 7008

After playing around with my Samplize paint samples, these are the colors I have decided on for the exterior of my home. Sherwin Williams Alabaster on the stucco, Sherwin Williams Extra White on the trim, and Benjamin Moore Glass Slipper for the ceilings in the entrance and lanai.

I love Alabaster, but was originally concerned that it might be too stark in the bright Florida sun. BUT,

1. I am using a flat paint with no sheen that reads darker.

2. Stucco with its textured finish reads darker.

3. Three sides of the house have filtered sun because of my huge palm trees and live oaks.

These factors should keep the color from washing out.

And with my terra cotta colored barrel tile roof, palm trees, live oaks, topiaries, blue and white Chinese porcelain, urns, and classic architecture, I realized that I really want a clean and bright white that will give me a timeless and elegant Palm Beach look. My home will be very distinctive in my neighborhood as 95% of the homes are those muddy Tuscan shades. This will be a show stopper.

Alabaster has enough gray and beige in it to keep it from being stark, and the Extra White trim will help bring out the creaminess in Alabaster but without yellow undertones. My home is now white, but with yellow undertones that look very dated.

Glass Slipper is a lovely ethereal soft blue that I had in my NOVA house and loved. I like the gentleness of it for my haint blue ceilings.

Here is a gorgeous home with Sherwin Williams Alabaster.

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

I want timeless and elegant, and I think these colors will nail it. I am quite excited about this project. My painters have become friends of mine and we have worked together on several projects and homes, so this should be very stress free.

I'll keep my front entrance just as I have it now with a pair of blue and white Chinese fishbowls with Eugenia triple ball topiaries and a pair of blue and white Chinese garden stools.

I found these blue and white Chinese planters and wanted to share them - the larger size would be wonderful as a pair at the front entrance filled with boxwood, or topiaries, or palms. They even have drainage holes! Great price!

I have a pair of garden stools flanking my front door and love this look - check out the price on this one.

I am thinking of adding this bench to my covered entryway. It would also be fabulous in a foyer or porch.

This one below is more than 5 times the price -

  1. Hi Beth,
Those are the color choices I was hoping you would choose. However, using flat paint usually means the surface is blemish free-no cracks, bulges, etc, as it shows everything.
I bet your house will be stunning.
    Best,
    Betty

    1. Thanks so much. Actually, flat paint hides imperfections. It is the sheen in paint that shows imperfections.

  2. Love the colors you've chosen, and I agree that flat paint hides imperfections. I can't wait to see photos of the finished project. Also, thanks for posting about those planters. Love them!

    2. Explain to this natural "Blond" what 150% of Glass Slipper (or any paint color for that matter) means or does?

    3. LOL. Every paint color starts out with a base. If you were to ask for a paint at 50% for example, they would just add half as many drops of color as the formula calls for. At 150%, you would be increasing the drops of color by 50%. Glass Slipper is a very light blue, and obviously this would darken it.

  4. All my trim and walls upstairs are painted Alabaster. Glass Slipper was on my master bedroom walls in my former house. You chose week! Love your colors!

    1. I have double French doors and they will be white - I personally don't like French doors in colors.

  6. Looking forward to seeing your house in the colors you've selected.

I have narrowed things down but still have some tweaking to do.
This is such a huge decision and you don't want to get it wrong so of course, I am obsessing. I see examples of what I don't want but nothing that I actually do and photos seldom translate...so I'm driving around and walking and taking pics and playing with my samples and hopefully I'll get there soon.

    1. People seem to either pick a paint chip without thought or they obsess. LOL
