The Scent of a Home

Le Creuset

I did this stovetop potpourri in one of my Le Creuset dutch ovens over the weekend and the house smells so wonderful - slice an orange, lemon, grapefruit, apple, and add cinnamon sticks and sprigs of fresh rosemary (and water). Simmer on the lowest setting without a lid and just keep adding water as needed. For a Christmas version, add fresh cranberries. I just purchased a couple rosemary plants for the garden and kitchen - I love the smell.

Christmas version

You can of course add star anise, nutmeg, cloves, vanilla, tangerines, clementines, peppercorns, or cardamon. Experiment! There are no rules or measurements. My house is smelling very autumnal despite 80 degree temps - I am not complaining. But here in South Florida, the seasons are subtle since it is always sunny and warm. I literally forget what month it is. Things like this make it seem more seasonal. If your temperatures allow, open the windows for a couple of hours while the stovetop potpourri is simmering.

  1. ...a handful of whole cloves is a nice addition to the mix also.

  2. Great idea! I go through candles so quickly and this is a great alternative.

  4. Rosemary grows so easily in our area. I have huge rosemary plants that are at least 10 years old. They take very little care and the one herb that makes it through the SW Florida summers with ease. You should plant a couple and always have fresh rosemary!
