Adulting for Halloween

CCC

Some Halloween decorating in my kitchen with my white pumpkin cocottes.

And here we have the perfect Halloween in Florida.

I'll be going to a pool/cocktail party on Halloween. Here is my attire. A Hill House Home Nap Dress - these dresses are my favorites and I have a lot of them. I'm wearing the Caroline in Black Swiss Dot.

BTW, if you are new to Hill House Home, here is my code for 20% off your first purchase. I started buying the Nap Dresses when the pandemic hit and they continue to be my favorite things in my wardrobe. Chic comfort clothes. I sleep in them, lounge in them, do errands in them, go out to eat in them, go to parties in them. You can't beat that. Their holiday drop was yesterday and there are some gorgeous choices.

And some autumnal Rothy's to wear with it.

These Casper earrings are too cute.

Our Wabi Sabi Life

I'm bringing a pitcher of Witches Blood Cocktails.

This is for one cocktail -

1.5 oz Bourbon
1 oz Blood Orange Liqueur
1 oz POM Pomegranate Juice
1/2 oz lemon juice
Ginger Beer (chilled)

Combine lemon juice, pomegranate juice, blood orange liquer, and bourbon in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

Shake vigorously for a minute then pour over ice in a rocks glass.

Top off with ginger beer.

I like Solerna Blood Orange Liqueur.

I wanted something lightweight and easy and comfortable for the pups for Halloween and found these darling candy corn collars at Target for $5. They are technically for cats but fit pets up to 20 pounds so can obviously be used for cats or small dogs - they have adjustable velcro.

And here is a new pic similar to yesterday's post on the pumpkin front door. This is from Southern Living. OK - how in the world do you safely walk up and down the stairs??? I am envisioning falling down the stairs with smashed pumpkins and broken glass everywhere. Hand rails are there for a reason. Don't they have a legal department advising them against promoting such unsafe ideas? DO NOT DO THIS.

Southern Living - aka Stupid Living

There are 1 million injuries a year in this country as a result of stairway falls. It is second only to auto accidents. 12,000 deaths a year in the U.S. from stairway falls.

  1. I purchased the pink print nap dress last summer after seeing that you had it in your closet. Up to that time, I had been unsure. I LOVE it! It washes so beautifully and needs no ironing The fabric is high quality as is the construction.

One of our houses has been featured in Southern Living. The photographers arrange everything for photos--and not for everyday living. They set up vignettes that would not necessarily be practical. So, I think that is going on with the pumpkin photos. Have you ever noticed a screened porch with all kinds of beautiful furniture and objects on it? That is also done for photos. We have a screened porch and leave only outdoor type furniture on it. Anything else would be ruined.

    1. So glad you like your Nap Dress. I understand photo shoots, I am an interior designer, but that was not my point. This is dangerous!!!! People copy magazine photos, and someone could do this and have someone kill or injure themself. This is horrible, period.

  2. You are so right. That staircase is an accident waiting to happen. I hope they get sued. I have always disliked that magazine anyway.

  3. I have major pet peeves with how magazine stylists go about arranging things and the last photo is one of many.
Take overcrowded bedside tables, coffee tables piled high and end to end, stacks of books from floor to chest high, and anything else that's not practical or is in fact dangerous.

Although to be fair, some well known designers whose work I love have also been guilty of doing it in their own homes. Maybe it's a photoshoot thing or maybe they just love it, practicality and safety be damned.

To each their own, in their own home.

    1. I object to a lot of staging. If an interior designer is so talented, why does their work need staging? Maybe we should hire the stager and not the interior designer. But this goes way beyond staging. This is promoting a look that could end in injury or death.

  6. Love your wicker elephant, Beth, and the Jantzen girls are wonderful. I'm going to print that and put it on my fridge. It makes me smile.

I actually find the pumpkin arrangement, especially the way they've been carved, to make a lovely still life. I think we've all seen objects assembled for photo styling on stairs, stair ways, bedside tables, etc., many times - candles, potted topiary, and so forth - and realize it's not to be taken literally, but as inspiration. I actually think one could make the stairway work provided the staircase is wide enough so that people can manage to walk it safely, and the objects are not placed on the same side as the hand rail.

The only objects I place on my bedside table are a lamp, whatever I'm currently reading, fresh flowers - maybe a single flower in a bud vase - and a glass of water at bedtime. (At some point the lamp will go and I will get two wall sconces for reading.)

    1. The problem is that many people will take this literally. This is not a clutter issue but about creating a danger in your home. Stairway falls kill 12,000 Americans each year and injure 1 million.
