From My Garden

A beautiful hibiscus blossom in my garden. It looks like red velvet.

Tory Burch

Like everyone else, I adore this iconic Tory Burch sunroom. A favorite piece of mine is the quirky orb. When I was in HG yesterday, I saw this jute one. Not exactly the same, but very similar. And likely a fraction of the price as the things in her home tend to be crazy expensive. My lanai is becoming a favorite space in my home.

My Lanai

I mentioned in an earlier post getting a Dash & Albert Catamaran indoor/outdoor rug for the lanai. I had not seen this rug in person, and as luck would have it, I found a brand new Dash & Albert Catamaran runner on eBay super cheap and bought it. I really wanted to see the rug in person before deciding on a large one for the lanai. Now having seen it, I do think the quality is great and it does not look like an outdoor rug at all.

My Foyer

Not sure if I will use this in the foyer or elsewhere, but it has convinced me to get a large one for the lanai.

Yesterday at Lowe's I saw this amazing palm tree - it is Coccothrinax Crinita from Cuba - nicknamed the Old Man Palm because its trunk looks like an old man's beard. It it quite extraordinary and I have the perfect spot for it. My sprinkler guy is Cuban and his family in Miami is in the nursery business, so I will have him source it for me along with some other things.

Thank you for the advice on growing a gardenia. I am convinced to try one. I am very against using chemicals in the garden, so I like to make sure I am not getting plants that require spraying.

  1. I love the striped rug! It makes the foyer look more finished and pulled together. It will no doubt help preserve your floor's finish, as well. Pretty and practical. I call that a winner.

  3. If you haven't already, you might take a look at Canfora of Capri sandals. canfora.com. A little more of a dressed up style than Jack Rogers.

  4. Beth...we have amazing gardenias in our garden in Jupiter. We also add coffee grounds every once in awhile to balance the soil. We have more issues with hibiscus due to bugs and maintenance. But they are beautiful! The old man palms are awesome-buy them as large as you can afford since they are truly slow growers. Have fun!! Love your bar cart!

    1. I bought the palm - it is amazing. No hibiscus issues here at all. Epsom salt is great for gardenias as well.

  5. Well, weren't you the clever girl to "try out" the ebay rug! I like it in the foyer, but understand your bare floor love, too. Anyway, it's a win-win. The Coccothrinax Crinita is astonishing! How great to have the perfect spot and the perfect way to acquire one. When I first started gardening, I was quick to learn that anything with an exotic name was out of my Zone 5b (now 6a). Viva la difference in your new tropical paradise.

    1. The rug was down for the picture only. Not sure where it will go, but it was a good experiment. I went from 7a/7b to 9b/10a.

  6. Love the Old Man palm and saw many in Havana. It will be a standout in your garden. The lanai is turning out great. Can’t wait to see which art pieces will find homes there.

    1. I learned they are now endangered in Cuba. I'm not sure art would be happy in the lanai with the heat and humidity. I have some alternative ideas.

  7. Beth, I love your blog and thank you for showcasing your home! I have been very lucky at Home Goods as well with blue and white chinoiserie lately! I had to comment on your small rug~ looks like an accident waiting to happen! No small rugs unless they are securely anchored by furniture! Cute, but easy to trip on!!! Elaine
