My Final HomeGoods Post

Barbara Barry Refined Rib Ivory Table Lamp

Yesterday morning a commenter jokingly suggested I form the first chapter of HomeGoods Anonymous. Was the person suggesting that I shop at HG too much? So I gave it some serious thought, and jumped in the car and headed to HomeGoods. I found this stunning Barbara Barry lamp and the detailing is wonderful. The lamp shade has a top to diffuse the light, it has a built in dimmer, and is simply quite elegant. It retails for $700 and I got it for $150. Here is a link to one of several stores that carries it.

This is not my last HG post - I love HomeGoods. Just a joke! HomeGoods is my happy place right now. I am not going to restaurants or bars or movies or the theater or parties or entertaining, but I can go to HomeGoods and find something wonderful for my beautiful new home.

Creating a lovely home is an act of faith in the future for me - a future with my daughter visiting, house guests, dinner parties, having friends over, and the like. This is not a pitch for retail therapy, but rather to do what you find joy in, a lot more difficult in these crazy times.

The lamp is going in the master bedroom next to the sofa. Here are a few shots of my bedroom in progress.

And Southern Living just named Venice the 6th best beach town in the United States to retire.

  3. Hi Beth! I definitely think you have HomeGoods ESP! I love your two latest editions. I think you have probably figured out by now that you have a particularly high end HG, most of them don't get this level of product. I live in Jacksonville, FL and it's very rare to get top designer pieces at ours. It is only 10 minutes from my house so I pop in once a week, I love it! I have a friend in West Palm and she finds similar pieces to you at her local HG. Additionally, her local TJ Maxx also carries, Gucci, Pucci, Ferragamo and tons of other high end brand clothes. Please keep sharing your HG finds, they are so much fun!

    1. Yes, I have heard about the West Palm ones. I actually have a "designer" TJ Maxx here too.

  4. Your home is spectacular. I hope a magazine picks up on it and does a feature - it really is very special, especially with the backdrop of your personal story and the pandemic. It gives me hope.

    1. I agree, your home and photos are magazine worthy. It's a pleasure to see you curate and layer. Just looking at the photos is so serene, it must be such a pleasure to actually live in such a beautiful setting.

  6. "Creating a lovely home is an act of faith in the future for me..." Your words really resonated. Your new home has become a happy place for us all, and a place that inspires all of us to have have faith in our own futures.

  7. Please don't promote Venice! Wait until you experience the streets in January February, March that are clogged with way too much traffic. Too many people have found our paradise. Yikes!

    1. I know! SL also put Sarasota on the list, I think it was #8 below Venice, citing the especially favorable # of physicians' offices per a certain retiree headcount!

    2. I think it's hysterical you think I have the power to increase traffic here. LOL
I might need to hire you as my publicist.

  8. I also love 💗 Homegoods 💗 ours here in Ocala is still hit or miss.....I did spot a palm lamp like yours and a black leather Mary McDonald occasional chair, and some Lilian August items. Since the virus though it has been very sparse. I do love the Tommy Bahama items they get in, nice for that island/coastal feel that I love for my home(with lots of blue and white of course!) I go once a week anyway, hope springs eternal!
    Blessings,
    Michelle

    1. Mine is more sparse which is somewhat nice actually. It was so packed before it was difficult to move your cart around. Much easier now to move around and to see things.

  9. Hi, I wish Home Goods offered online shopping. There isn't one near me and you are killing me with all of your lucky finds!
Did you find the Herend bunnies there too?

    1. LOL about the Herend - I had a dear friend who gave me Herend pieces for birthdays and Christmas - there are 2 monkeys on the top shelf.

  13. I know that feeling of finding something you love and know costs so much more than what you're seeing in front of you. It's a gift that keeps on giving because every time you look at it in your perfect spot at home you are appreciate it all over again and are reminded of lucky you got that day.

I miss that feeling because I truly do not need a thing and already have more than I should--in closets and storage. I was recently lamenting that fact to a friend with whom I used to go on expeditions to tag sales, flea markets and antique holes in the wall. Not looking for anything specific, but "looking" nonetheless for anything that spoke to us. We both came away with lovely treasures we still have in our homes today to remind us of places and times spent together hunting. There is nothing like the adrenaline rush of spying something special off in the corner and finding out how reasonably priced it is. And getting it even if you don't have a perfect place for it right now but you know you will. The story writes itself and it's one of my favorites to be told and retold during lunch and over drinks with a kindred spirit. Only veterans understand what I'm talking about.

I still get stuff but with a more measured and discriminating approach. It's good practice, but I do miss the rush.

    1. All so true. I gave lots of things to my daughter when I moved and donated lots because there was no sense paying to move things unless I loved it AND had a spot for it. So I definitely have some room here and am donating here too. All my lighting fixtures went to a local homeless organization.

  14. Don't you just love the small Plantation shutters? They let in just enough light or totally block it out; also exhibit a clean upgraded look to the windows. They are truly quintessential. I really favor them over the larger version.

The HG store has wonderful towels, bath and kitchen items. I have not really seen much else of interest. Count yourself most lucky to have a fab variety at HG in Venice!

    1. I really love the plantation shutters. They are elegant and private and I am so fortunate to have them on all the windows - even the garage!

  15. HomeGoods Annonymous. That is so funny. How does HomeGoods determine where they send certain merchandise? I have never found anything close to what you have found at my local HomeGoods store, and I live in an upscale area. Maybe my local HG is just too far off the beaten track to justify carrying and quickly moving the kind of merchandise that yours does.

    1. Not sure, but I do know there is a surplus of inventory because of the pandemic and HomeGoods will take advantage of it snatching things up - TJ Maxx and HomeGoods are doing very well.

Total aside. I live in Gig Harbor, WA and we were named #2 on that list. Here’s to living in lovely places.

  17. I think the secret of HG is that once there, you have to "know it when you see it".

Liking something at first sight and getting it is fine. BUT actually knowing what it is, who it is by, and remembering how much it usually retails for, well, it makes the find that much sweeter.

  18. I love that lamp. It is classic and timeless. The bedroom is such a haven! Your pagodas on the bar cart are wonderful as well. Actually, it is all spectacular. I adore how you repurposed your living room sofa for the master. We did the same and it really makes the room into a sitting room. I will have to try the W Palm Home Goods as the one in Boca disappoints. You have the best shopping karma ever!

  19. Have you told the stories of all your TULIPIERS? Adore yours.

My favorite beach, since birth, and I'm not young, is XXXXXXX. Finally got there with Beloved. He'd long heard my raving, and agreed !!!

You are fortunate to be in the zone Ixora grows. Looking forward to your gardening.

  21. I saw that article in Southern Living, too. Like the other comment said, it does get crazy here during season, but Sarasota is much worse, as you probably know. When we first moved here in 1982, many stores on Venice Ave. downtown would close for August and/or September. It certainly isn't like that anymore! I haven't been to HomeGoods since the end of February just before all this virus stuff started. My new "happy place" is eBay. We are at the very beginning of totally renovating our house and it makes me very happy and filled with hope to start getting things for the redo, so I know how you feel. Keep happy and hopeful!

  22. I completely adore that lamp! So sleek and elegant...it is TOTALLY YOU!!! I am so envious of your bar cart, I am considering breaking and entering. I have searched for one like that for YEARS, with no luck whatsoever. Lots of HG all over Dallas, but I have yet to see anything more amazing than lovely RL lamps. You have the Midas touch, my dear! Stay strong (since you said the drama is continuing! GRRRRR!!!!).
