Day One

Casa Chinoiserie Chic

Thank you for all your supportive comments yesterday. Closing went well, although after an hour and a half with masks on in a conference room, I was so anxious to get outside and over to my new house. I had the car already loaded with things to bring over and as I pulled in I had to pinch myself that this is really happening. I did a couple of trips over bringing breakables. I decided since I will be back and forth supervising work on the house, it would be easier to throw things in my car than have to carefully pack everything.

I finally got back here late in the afternoon and had a favorite meal of sushi and Champagne to celebrate. This morning, I meet the painters and plumber and roofer at the house and it all begins.

I can't wait to try out the Samplize paint samples on the walls. I will take pictures and let you know how they work out.

And some miscellaneous updates, some might turn into posts soon.

Simplisafe

I just ordered a Simplisafe home security system after being with ADT in Virginia for years. I will let you know how I like it. Have any of you installed it?

My realtor gave me a lovely housewarming gift including all the fixings for mojitos. They might be on the agenda for later today at the new house.

Mojitos

I found someone on Etsy who handcrafts these personalized hand fans in Mexico with your monogram, logo, whatever you like. I think I will order some.

Personalized Hand Fans

I have wanted a reclaimed lobster rope front doormat and I went down the rabbit hole starting in Maine and Massachusetts and ended up with someone who weaves them by hand in my backyard. She is making a custom one for me.

Lobster Rope Doormats

And finally today, I want to buy a cordless stick vacuum. Recommendations? I had wanted a robot vacuum, but I think with all my low furniture and table skirts and such it will be an issue. I love this Dyson in fuchsia just because of the color. LOL! I seriously want this vacuum.

  1. So glad to hear all went well with your closing! Welcome home! I look forward to seeing all of the vacuum suggestions as I am shopping for a new one too๐Ÿ˜

  2. I'm curious about the cordless vacuum recommendations as well. I have a corded Miehle upright that is amazing. Best vacuum made, if you ask me. You can adjust the suction strength so that you can vacuum fragile silk cushions or dense pile carpet. But it's heavy. I'd like to get a cordless stick vacuum to do quick dog hair pickups on hardwood floors.

  5. I have a Shark and I love it. Make sure you get one that has the ability to remove the battery and buy another battery right away. I love that I can swap out the battery and keep going and this thing really works. It actually works better than my Miele.

  6. WOO HOO... Here WE go!! I can't wait!

We like our Stick Dyson so much we got one for our other house, also. They are soo easy and lightweight. So many models to choose from. The longer the battery lasts, the heftier the price.

Does your mat person have an etsy shop?

So excited for this next chapter!!

  8. Congratulations on your Naples home. It's the perfect location to bigger cities, yet with a sedate feel. Do keep us posted on the lobster robe mats. They are a brilliant addition.

  9. You will love the Dyson stick vacuum. I have the v8 absolute -- and it's a dream. Great on floors (tiles and carpeting separate attachments) and additional attachments for free. The robot will zoom around your floors, but I like to vacuum the bookshelves and vents etc, so a stick is definitely the way to go.

    1. Yes, I agree, I need the versatility of a stick.

  10. You're just having way too much fun here Beth! Love the fans. I'm curious about the Simplisafe. I have Bay Alarm here in northern CA, and I'm happy with them. Wifi in my house is very sketchy and unreliable, and I'm always mindful of the vulnerabilities of anything someone could hack into. I've heard mixed reviews on the Dyson vacuums, but I LOVE THAT YOURS IS PINK! My hair dresser has a Dyson blow dryer and she says it's fabulous. I have an Oreck upright vacuum and I like it, though I have two long haired cats and I really need a smaller (handheld?) vacuum that is lightweight, easy to operate, and really picks up all of that fur that gets on furniture.

    1. Yes, I have two long haired dogs so I get the fur issue. The Dyson seems perfect - light, cordless, and very versatile.

    2. Dyson make a model specifically for pet owners. I have had the Dyson sticks for many years since they first came out. Back then, I had a two story home and it was a game changer not having to lug a heavy machine up the stairs and constantly move the plug and manage the cord. You will find it a game changer.

  11. And the new day begins. So much fun!! Looking forward to seeing you make your magic. We have the Dyson v11 absolute. The thing I like best is that my husband now is the sweeper! We felt cordless (our first) would be a safer option as we get older—no cords to get tumbled up in. It really does a great job. I hope that eventually Dyson will develop a sweeper with rechargeable batteries that snap on and off so that you could have a longer run time by snapping on fresh battery while the other one recharages. We don't have an internal security system, but we have 8 Ring cameras that cover the exterior.

    1. Yes, a cordless is very appealing. The cord makes me crazy. Glad you like your Dyson.

  12. Oh-sooo exciting! I'm anxious to see which colors you choose, whether or not you paint any of your light fixtures, how each room comes together according to your plan or not. Each house has a personality. And although you may have the same style and use many items over, there are always fresh ways of looking at things. I have lived in this house for three years and have changed things up several times. But that's because I get tired of having things the same all the time, and I'm constantly finding projects to work on that I then want to incorporate. I've painted furniture, light fixtures, cabinets; upholstered furniture, bought furniture, moved furniture around; changed color schemes and put in new countertops, backsplashes, appliances and fixtures. It's always evolving because I am always evolving.

And as of today (!) my husband and I have decided it's time to sell this house. I've been busy purging and packing today. Yikes!

I wish you great happiness in your new surroundings!

  13. So SO glad you have a security system. Even more than wall colors, chandeliers, ceiling fans, flooring - your security is priority #1 especially given a broken local relationship. PLEASE take care.

    1. Thanks for your concern. It is a gated community and I am having a state of the art security system installed as well.

  14. DYSON - the latest one with three power settings and a window telling you how much time is left on the charge. Heavier than the older one - but - oh my - does it ever suck !!! wonderful.

Where do I order the lobster door mat?

  15. What an exciting day, congratulations. I am looking forward to every post about your transformation. Regarding the Dyson, I have had them since they first came out. They are brilliant and a game changer. Lightweight is great, but also not having to wrangle the cord and move to another plug makes vacuuming a breeze. They are powerful and have a max boost setting if you need some real power, though that drains the batteries really quickly. They are pretty quick and simple to open and empty. I use the long nozzle to quickly suck up bits in the kitchen and bathroom each morning, and obvious bits around the house, then put on the normal vacuum attachment to do the whole house once a week.

  16. Congratulations on the settlement of the beautiful house. Let your new life begin. What is so wonderful is that this is all yours and only yours!

I live in a gated community as well. I believe this can create a bit of a false sense of security at times as this only keeps honest people out. There are so many workers, vendors, etc within the gates. I have installed a RING doorbell which is amazing. The front of the house can be viewed at all times from your phone as well as when you are away from the house. Additional security is always a good idea. I also have motion-detecting spotlights on each corner of the house. These are also great as anyone approaching the house at night will be surprised and blinded by the intense LED lightbulbs. Most of the time when these are activated it turns out to be wandering creatures.

I have a lobster rope doormat at the front door which is wonderful, especially in Florida where the damp humidity and sun will eventually disintegrate most materials. The mat is well made, can be customized and hosed down and dried in the sun for a refresh. I purchased this one from New England Trading Company.

I have no experience with the Dyson though this looks great...I have a Miehle. I use a small dust-buster to clean up small jobs.

Mojitos are always a good idea and the fans are darling.

    best,
    teaorwine

    1. Yes, gated communities are statistically safer but not immune. I have always had a security system and like having one. The owners stopped by my house Sunday and I picked out two doormats that are gorgeous. I will post photos. The Dyson arrived but have not unpacked it yet.

  17. LOVE following along with your adventure, and I especially love all the joy this project is bringing you. You are so deserving.

Hoda and Jenna just gave away the exact Dyson stick vacuum you featured above to one of their viewers, and they were commenting that it’s an amazing vacuum.

  18. Yes yes yes to the Dyson! I have their Animal stick vacuum and LOVE IT. Especially with pets, it makes it so easy to vacuum regularly. My model is an older one (I don't think they make it anymore), but I've had three dyson vacuums and have loved all of them. I still have a big upright Dyson for cleaning the pet fur off the sofa, but the stick does everything else!
