Chinoiserie Repurposed and Finding the Perfect Orange

Some of you may remember my story from 2010, when a follower of Chinoiserie Chic gave me a head's up that an Etsy seller was selling 15 rolls of Clarence House Chinoiserie Baroque wallpaper for $150.00. A very expensive and discontinued wallpaper BTW. I snatched it up - what a steal!!!!!!!!! and had it hung in my dining room.

I am thrilled to have enough left to do my guest bathroom in the new home.

I  am redoing the lighting and the vanity but that is for another post. Today, the dilemma is I want to keep the wainscoting and have my painter lacquer it in high gloss orange that will go with my wallpaper to be hung above. I need to choose a paint color as they will be starting on July 9th.

Why about Benjamin Moore Racing Orange?

The Benjamin Moore App came up with Tandoori.

So, your mission is to help me find an orange BM paint that will work with my wallpaper. I want it to be fun and not too brown and russety and could use your thoughts. It needs to go with the tile and wallpaper and tie everything together. I will order a few Samplize as soon as we find some options. You can weigh in with these I have found or suggest others. BTW, orange is absolutely stunning with blue and white Chinese porcelain.

This could be great with very little $. I plan to have my great stone folks use a granite or quartz remnant for the vanity and top it with a vessel sink and switch out the lighting fixture to something more chic. And I am thrilled to use a paper I loved in my Alexandria home.. I am also having the laundry room wallpapered. I will post on the laundry room too. Stay tuned.......

And the big favorite yesterday was the Royal Palm. Thanks for participating.

P.S. Two additions thanks to two follower's comments - I neglected to say that the vanity will be lacquered in the orange as well. And here's another great orange -

Benjamin Moore Dragon's Blood

  2. This bathroom is going to be so much fun. I really like the idea of lacquering the lower part of the walls. It will be a little jewel box.

  3. Beth, I love the both the wallpaper and the orange lacquer. Wonderful idea. It is hard to choose a color based on color representation on computer monitors (which may differ dependent upon each user's device) and because the wallpaper sample is not proximal to each paint sample. From what I can see, I think maybe Topaz or Tandoori to coordinate with the tile. It just depends on what looks best in the room and light.

    1. You are correct of course. I will go to BM later and get some samples and then order a few from Samplize. Just thought it would be fun to include everyone in the process. I find that bathroom a bit drab but I am not going to rip out everything for a guest bath. I think this will be fun and dramatic and very low cost.

    1. Thanks - I love Pumpkin Cream in the photo of the lacquered cabinet. To me, that bathroom needs some spark. This should do it!

  6. The wallpaper is to die for. LOVE the idea of orange laquered wainscotting, I assume the vanity cabinet will be painted too?
The biggest challenge in picking the right orange is that it is in harmony with the adjacent bathroom tile and the only way to know for sure is to slap those samples down and take a long look.

The wallpaper is easier to work with. On my screen Carrots looks pretty divine next to it although many others you've chosen would be lovely, too.

    1. Yes, I neglected to say, and thank you for mentioning, that the cabinet will be painted as well in the lacquered orange. Yes, I will order several of these from Samplize and bring them over.

  9. Look at Steins Furniture on Instagram. They have lacquered several pieces in orange. They seem to use Benjamin Moore paint frequently and they generously give the name of the paint. BM Orange Nectar is one of my favorites.

  10. I like the last two best, but agree with DesignDoctor regarding differences in our screens vs real color and the color of tile. You'll know. About the vanity, mirror and lights. Consider removing the sheet mirror and replacing with a fanciful CC-style one. Then you would have room to put sconces on either side. Or, remove the current sheet mirror and install one that comes flush with the top of the window moulding. In this case, you could install sconces and another mirror on top of the mirror AND install the faucet fixture on the wall/mirror. It would look cleaner IMHO to take the mirror to the top of the vanity stone vs to the top of a small stone backsplash. Hate those gaps!! between backspash/walls. Why have two? Lights, plumbing and mirror hanging position all have to be done with precision and coordination and just about killed me, the electrician and the plumber! I did the later in my powder room and I love the look and the simplicity of cleaning up. Regarding vessel sinks, I have two and I looked for sinks with "double walls" not "lips" on edge. There is more surface contact between the vessel and the vanity, making a more stable install. If you don't install the faucet in the wall, make sure to choose a faucet that goes into the center of the bowl (or as close as you can). We stayed at a hotel in France last year. A beautiful bath, but the vessel sink was too far from the standing faucet and it was a constant mess!!!! But it did look pretty...until you actually used it. Ugggh.

    3. HBD - Great ideas as always. I put in blue and white Chinese dragon vessel sinks in the master bath here and love them - I plan on using them in the master bath in my home. As far as the guest bathroom, it can just look pretty - I don't intend for it to be used much. LOL

I will definitely remove the mirror - great ideas on what to do - thanks!

  11. I would definitely let the wainscoting remain...adds architectural interest to the room. I like sconces on the side of the mirror better than above if it can be arranged. Better lighting for the face. Having said that this is a guest bath that will not be used daily, I would guess. Another consideration is whether you like the lights facing up or down should you put it on top of the mirror. Much to read on this subject. Placing them up is less blinding, however placing them downward allows more light on the face and this is a bathroom! It appears that the louvered shutter will open towards the mirror. Another consideration, although these are rarely opened other than for cleaning!

Sheet mirrors are the simplest for builders to install; a beautiful chinoiserie style mirror would be a good replacement or a moulding surrounded mirror. Wandering if the vanity will be totally replaced or painted in the soon-to-be determined orange lacquer? Countertop remnants are the way to go as they are quite reasonably priced. I did this in my guest baths. Lots to select from.

I agree that it is difficult to pass a judgement on the paint selection of an orange as the resolution on each computer varies greatly. You have quite a few favorable options to choose from!

Cute little shell pulls on the cabinet; will they be staying?

Also, I saw a beautiful faux palm in an advert from Serena & Lilly; it was a nice addition to the tropical feel, for sure.

    1. What a great comment - so much appreciated. I will know better once I get in and measure on the lighting - I prefer sconces but I will see if that makes the mirror too small. I have time on that - the painters are in first so focusing now on the paint color selections. Thank you for your always excellent comments.

  12. I am very jealous that your before bathroom looks 100x better than my after bathroom. Now your after is a million times better! I trust any color you choose because you always make it look stunning - even red and pink together in your study. Thank you for taking me along on your beautiful journey. Cheers to your fabulous future!

  13. Me again. Love the wallpaper and love when good value happens to tasteful people. My thoughts- lacquer the vanity you have the same color as the wainscoting. Replace the mirror with chinoiserie style with a wide bamboo frame. Please reconsider the vessel sink. I also liked them the first time i saw them. I know that everyone who "lives" on the internet has a passionate cleaning person, their house never settles, and their grout never cracks. But, really who gets stuck cleaning behind the vessel sink? I do. And when the grout needs replacing the tile person says, "Oh gee this all has to come out!" Of course I googled vessel sinks and one of the first to pop up looked like hand painted blue and white Chinese export porcelain and my heart weakened.

    1. In the master bath here I put in two blue and white Chinese dragon vessel sinks. They are gorgeous, easy to clean, and probably my favorite things in the house. I am using the exact same ones in my new house. And I am a passionate cleaning person. LOL
