Wicker & Chinoiserie

Sarah Bartholomew

With both Sarah Bartholomew and Amanda Lindroth introducing their collections of wicker home furnishings, this staple of preppy and timeless decor is definitely having a resurgence. When I was at Bryn Mawr undergrad, my fiancé and I spent our summers in the Hamptons and we collected antique wicker. When we started law school in D.C.. we rented a U-Haul to drive our wicker down to our new Georgetown home. He is long gone, but I still have a favorite wicker chaise with a Mario Buatta covered cushion. Today's wicker tends to be natural, whereas vintage wicker was more often painted white.

Wicker combines so well with Chinoiserie!

I have this arriving today from Amanda Lindroth's collection. It is wicker with navy blue leather handles. I love that it has a glass insert. I plan to use it on my bedside table.

I also have some vintage Kate Spade wicker handbags that would be a perfect look here in Florida. I'd love to start using them if we ever get to go out again. Any wicker fans out there?

  1. Love wicker. Have considered purchasing Lindroth's trays with the blue handles as well. Share a review when they arrive, please.

  2. Beth, might want to check out Urban Outfitters. They have some really nice wicker/rattan pieces that are quite chic. My daughter-in-law sent me some links last week and I ordered a couple of pieces for the solarium. Who knew that Urban Outfitters sold home goods? Best regards, Deborah

  3. I've always loved wicker. I had wicker in my single days-affordable and portable. I lost a beautiful peacock chair to a former football player. Each were rendered spineless after he leaned back into it! I've had arm chairs and love seats: some in the house, some on the porch. We inherited from my husband's mother (through her uncle who may or may not have been a Jay Gatsby-Bernie Madoff character) that he had around his pool in his 1924 mansion. They were painted white. The last time around I have painted them black. They are so sturdy.

    1. Such a classic. I really like wicker painted black. That's a great idea.

  4. So pretty - that blue and white lampshade on the pendant light with the wicker furniture. I absolutely LOVE wicker and it's certainly having a moment. I'm seeing some really beautiful and unusual pieces here - the pagodas, the chinoiserie bookcase. I'm guessing that's a bookcase. Thank you for this pretty post, Beth.

  6. I just bought Amanda's book on Amazon. Amazon also carries her wicker trays. (They popped up in my recommendations.)
