Continuing with our series on Chinoiserie walls, this week we will look at framed Chinoiserie wallpaper panels. This is an incredibly elegant choice, loved by interior designers, and it has the advantage of portability if you move and far less expense than doing an entire room in Gracie, de Gournay, or Fromental. We will be looking at antique and vintage choices, modern versions, and how interior designers integrate this gorgeous look into rooms. We begin today with a look at antique and vintage choices available at 1st dibs. These wonderful examples include framed and unframed French and Chinese and range from 19th century to mid 20th century. The Decorator's Secret is a wonderful source for vintage Gracie panels. These run about $950 for two unframed panels and they have over 100 designs.
I love them too!!! thought you might like to see mine :)

A lovely idea for vintage wall papers!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fascinating group of examples.
ReplyDeleteAt Saltram in Devon we have the type with the willowy ladies in what is called the Chinese Dressing Room, and that paper is thought to be early eighteenth-century.
At Erddig, in Clwyd, Wales, one of the late eighteenth-century owners cut circular vignettes from a Chinese wallpaper showing scenes from daily life and pasted them onto white wallpaper with European block-printed borders of flowers, so that it looks a bit like one of those rooms where prints have been pasted onto the walls.
I've actually been looking into having some panels framed for my bedroom -- lots of wall space left to fill. Thanks for the tip on shopping though...heading to the decorator's secret now!
ReplyDeleteI'm an artist and have painted many chinoiserie-style paintings for clients who love this look. The bonus is that I can customise the colours and design completely. If you're interested I've included a link to my most recent painting which is for a young lady's bedroom:
