Here is my newest Chinoiserie work of art that I just picked up from the framer. It is a wonderful 19th century French Chinoiserie painting for tapestry. This lovely gouache on paper was created for the development of a woven tapestry. It has the pencil guidelines and small x's that served as guides for the weavers. I bought it on eBay for $15.00. I had it framed using a silk mat and gold bamboo frame. Click on the pictures for greater detail. I hope to find a place for it in my new Pagoda Bedroom.

What a find Beth! Hope to see the evolution of the bedroom!
ReplyDeleteOops,,,,been working out of town and just caught up on your posts...the Pagoda Bedroom is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteLove it. Gouache is a wonderful medium. And I am always drawn to dark grounds.
ReplyDeleteOff topic slightly, but Theresa Cheek's comments reminded me that I wanted to let you know about a new young blogger named Lauren at (In)Decorous Taste. She, like Theresa, is a decorative artist. And, like you, is a Seven Sister graduate (Vassar) and loves that mix of fashion/decor. It's fun to see new, young talent who has a love for classic yet personal style. I'm just delving into the new More Is More Tony Duquette book and I while I am drawn to the pictures, the words are mesmerizing. The opening of the book is from a three-day lecture at UCLA in1971—the year I graduated from college. Wish I had known what was going on!
OMG! I am SOOOO ENVIOUS! The soft blues in this piece would be perfect for my guest bedroom! With you out there on Ebay snatching up all the goodies, I am definitely at a disadvantage shopping! But I'm so happy for you to have something this wonderful to enjoy!
ReplyDeletePS: Still no luck on the Xian fabric...but I am not about to give up...where there is a will there is a way...I just need access to the various colorways of it..but bottom line: I will probably take whatever I can get!
I think wanting such a small amount definitely puts me at a disadvantage. Have a great day and thanks for sharing your new piece...and the frame is PERFECTION!
What a great eBay find, Beth! And you've framed it perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI've given you an award.
ReplyDeleteit looks amazing! watch out for me on ebay; i have been trolling the chinoiserie!
ReplyDeleteTheresa-Thanks so much. I love the painting and the room.
ReplyDeleteHome Before Dark-Thanks for the head's up on (In)Decorous Taste. I will check it out. I must get the new Toy Duquette book. I am a huge fan. When I saw the Tony Duquette Collection at Baker Furniture I was blown away. What a genius he was.
ReplyDeleteVickie-A Chinoiserie competitor on eBay-oh no! I will do some searching on the Brunschwig & Fils. All I have seen so far was 10 yards on eBay which you don't need. I'll keep you posted.
ReplyDeleteAverill-Thanks so much-I never tire of gold bamboo-it always seems to work.
ReplyDeleteJill-Thanks so much. I am honored.
ReplyDeleteKitty-Oh no, not another eBay Chinoiserie stalker! LOL
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful find - love this!
ReplyDeleteClayton Gray Home-Thanks, I think it's charming.
ReplyDeletei have a thing for sterling spoons; i recently got a sweet one from ebay. the handle is tooled to look like bamboo and there is a tiny worn buddha on the end. the entire set got away from me, but i was thrilled to even just get the one! i am systematically emptying all stock of antique alice in wonderland items! yay ebay!
ReplyDelete$15! Score of the year!
ReplyDeleteThe framing cost SO much more- that I know- but it looks so lovely. I think that I would be so happy at your house and would just smile :)
I wasn't even aware this style existed. So interesting - and what a steal. Sounds like I need to get on ebay more often.
ReplyDeleteKitty-I have a thing for silver bamboo-sounds gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteGrant-Yes, framing is the issue, but it came out so well.
ReplyDeleteSanity Fair-It's quite unique, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteGreat find! I just wanted to stop by and say that I love your blog. I'm also from DC and I love Chinoiserie.
