I came across this very pretty picture of mahjong tiles in a lovely chinoiserie bowl. I am sure that the lucite boxes that mahjong companies sell are the preferred way to store and display your mahjong tiles, but I love this bowl idea. Lots of people do use decorative bowls for storing and displaying their tiles. Crystal bowls are a popular choice, but I would prefer a chinoiserie option. Mahjong did indeed originate in China.
I of course have a wonderful collection of Chinese bowls. I think they would be great for my mahjong tiles as I collect more sets over time.
The lucite boxes are not cheap either averaging about $100. I would rather use my bowls that I already have. The tip I read is just to keep them out of direct sun.
Chinese bowls can be functional for serving, or for fruit, vegetables, or as catch-alls or decorative for seashells, moss balls, sea glass, pinecones, anything you like. I am not a fan of potpourri however. (There is nothing worse than dusty, faded, cheap smelling potpourri).
