Lettuce Ware and Cabbage Ware

Cruciferous Leaf Taper Candleholder

Last week I posted on these wonderful cabbage ware egg cups shown below. I just found these cruciferous leaf candleholders above. Cruciferous? Cruciferous vegetables are a family of plants (Brassica) that includes broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, and arugula. So now we know.

Cabbage ware and lettuce ware are often used interchangeably to describe 18th-century to modern ceramics molded to resemble leafy green vegetables. While both feature vibrant green, ruffled designs, "cabbage ware" often refers to denser, head-like shapes (like Bordallo Pinheiro), while "lettuce ware" frequently refers to lighter, hand-cast, or more delicate leaf designs made famous by artists like Dodie Thayer.

So I guess the candleholders at top would be cabbage ware. They are by Two's Company, they are avaiable at Tuckernuck, and they are just $18.

I have the feeling whoever named this got a good chuckle out of it. This would be lovely for setting the spring and summer table and for the collector of lettuce and cabbage ware. And make sure to eat all of your cruciferous vegetables.
