I bet many of us remember well our first Kate Spade handbag. Mine was a leopard calf hair with red wool lining. I still have it and every Kate Spade handbag I ever bought and still love them all. My closet has many of her handbags, shoes, clothes, and jewelry. I loved her style so much - I can't believe she's been gone 7 years. What a shame.
I was the hugest Kate Spade fan. Her personal style and brand really captured my own fashion and style sensibilities - happy, preppy, colorful, feminine, vintage, and fun.
What you may not know is that Kate and her husband Andy sold Kate Spade to the Neiman Marcus Group many years back. Kate then took time off to raise their daughter Frances Beatrix. When their daughter was of school age, in 2016 she founded Frances Valentine with husband Andy and longtime friend and co-founder of Kate Spade - Elyse Arons. Frances is their daughter's name and a family name and Valentine is a family name as well, both on Kate's side. After the death of Kate Spade, Elyse Arons took the helm of Frances Valentine. Before her death, Kate had created several years' worth of designs for Frances Valentine.
The Frances Valentine brand started with shoes and accessories but has now expanded into apparel and jewelry and even a bit of homewares. It is a great favorite of mine. This week Elyce Arons' book on her friendship with Kate launched. Entitled We Might Just Make It After All, it chronicles her decades long friendship with Kate that began their freshman year of college and continued until Kate's death.
"A moving portrait of friendship by Elyce Arons as she reflects on her long relationship with Kate Spade, whom she met in college and with whom she cofounded the multi-billion-dollar fashion company as they came of age in 1990s New York."

I have a basketful full of sunglasses, but my ancient Kate Spade aviators are my go to pair. I’ve dropped them so many times and had them repaired. I will never rid of any of my purses either.
ReplyDeleteI do remember my first Kate Spade handbag. It was the very simple black nylon one with Kate's label. I still have it, and it's in great shape. Her death was such a tragedy. As someone who suffered from depression, I can tell you it's the devil. I was very fortunate that I found a wonderful psychiatrist who never gave up on me, and because of him, I was able to overcome it and move on to a happy and productive life. I am grateful to be one of the fortunate ones.
